Two things that I am not understanding;

1.) I can't figure out how to make my copter hover into place very well. I can do it with some struggle, but it takes way to long and even with game mode enabled I am having trouble controlling my aircraft.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips? Please be specific though, and use keyboard references.

1-a.) What does the hover key (H) do, and how does it work? When I press it, it doesn't seem to do anything at all. I guess I don't actually understand its purpose, and was wondering if someone could explain.

2.) While in game mode, I am having trouble quickly targeting the ground vehicles I want to attack. Using the (N) key, the game always seems to want to cycle through a dozen targets that are no where close to where I am, and are way off my screen. Can someone please explain an easier, more effective way to quickly target what I want?

This is stuff that I have been trying to look up in the manuals and online, but its either written for simulation mode, or just doesn't make sense to me right now. I am hoping someone could spell it out in laymen terms. :joystick:

I'll try to help you with the first one.

Fact is you need to practice a lot - ain't no way around it. Now, I fly using only the KB so it's near impossible for me to transition from forward flight to hover at the spot of my choice. But I've managed to get the machine pretty close to where I wanted to be more often than not now by,

1. Know where I am and where I want to be and slow down wayyyy in advance of where I want to hover. Once I'm about a kilometer of where ever that is,

2. lower the collective + gently pull back on the cyclic (I don't worry about losing or gaining alt at this stage) then

3. once the speed is down to 40 kmh or below then I hit Left Alt+T -- sit back and make sure I don't sink to the ground.

4. once in a stable hover, I manage the alt I want to be. I disable auto hover if I have to.

5. once I'm at desired alt, I point the nose to where I want to be and slowly creep toward my target at about 4-5kph -- it takes ages but it's the only way for me.

After you're comfortable with the above then you can concern yourself with maintaining altitude as you coming to a hover.

I've never use H so I don't know what it does and have never tried game mode.

You didn't answer my question, at all. I know what the keys are, but I don't understand how they work. It is a bit more involved then just simply pressing some keys. If you just do that, they do absolutely nothing. Your helicopter must be going a certain speed, and have a certain altitude for those two keys to work correctly. What I wanted, was for someone to explain in finer detail exactly how to get hovering to work correctly. leafer answered my question pretty much. Now it is just a matter of going back and applying what he said, and continuing to practice.

I still need my second question answered.

Hi

What helped me a lot was to go into the training section within the game, works a treat. Also watch the producers notes.

Trying to follow the manual is hard as i find it is more for reference!!

As you read the manual it gives you all the info you want but doesn't always give you the key commands. ( very frustrating ).

What i needed as there is a steep leaning curve was an idiots guide i.e.

a few pages that give you the basic key commands that are easy to follow and is immediately to hand when you first purchase the sim.

We all want to quickly get into the air (not in arcade mode), get a few kills and be able to take off and land and then explore the sim further.

Stick with it as it is a in all aspects it is a brilliant sim.

I'm on my second day of learning the flight model. Just completed my first successful start up/hover/takeoff/base leg/landing/shutdown. Feels good :) Landing was scary!

The training missions and the great checklists people have made here taught me everything so far.

Arggh!!! I knew that! I need to stop clicking the booger-sized buttons and use the keyboard more.

As for number two, I think the only way to quickly acquire a target is with TrackIR or FreeTrack in combination with the HMS. There's no other way around it that I know of.
