I haven't used bombs yet, but are they practical weapons in this game? It seems that if you get up a little too high, you can be easily spotted and attacked. With using bombs you need to get to the minimum altitude and extremely close to the target, which means exposing yourself to attack. Is this a sane thing to do?

Lol, not really. Helicopters were never really meant to be bombers. I have never in reality seen a helicopter loaded with bombs. I think this is some engineers dream or maybe its for when you've lost all your jets and have a few heli's left. Time for volunteers!

As you may have noticed, there is no CCIP or CCRP mode on the hud. You just drop and pray. :megalol:

I've seen helos with bombs. A Huey with MK82 strapped to it's belly. It's a odd sight.

In the game though, I tried the bombs, and I'd say, they are useless except for bombing an erea full of defenseless units. Even then, it's not really practical. I practiced aiming them, and it's still crappy.

I prefer spamming them with rockets from a safe distance. You never know if there is a clown down there with an SA-9.

Yeah, I think putting bomb on heli's is from the pre-good AA era. :P

If you want to bomb, flip your hud to standy recticle, get up really high, then power dive straight down, 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground. Get your sight on the target when you can see it, then release as high up as you can. Now pull up without ripping your rotors off. Good luck. :pilotfly:

I read that in Afghan war, the way they used bombs was that first one Mi-24 would clear the area with rockets, and immediately after another would come in with bombs and finish the job.

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Make sence. Though I never seen it mentionned in my books about the Russian-Afghan war.

I got one that is pretty detailled in every type of mission and tactics used by the Mujahadeens. They mentionned how the helicopters operated, what they used and how, but never the bombs. Must have been only in very few occasions.

Actually, the only time I've ever seen bombs dropped from a helicopter was in ..."Rambo 2" :megalol:. So I doubt I will even be experimenting with bombs much. Oh ... think I will expirement, set up a mission and give my wingman a load and see how what they do when directed to attack a target with them!!! Good idea??? :pilotfly:

Stay over the objetive, engage autohover, and drop :D

Pretty useles, BUT if they are there is because the real KA-50 can carry that ordnance.

I did a semi-successful dive-bombing run in BS. Successful, in that I blew up a ton of targets. Not successful in that I didn't survive it.

Viper169th made an online mission with an enemy HQ inside a valley. It was heavily defended by AAA and SAMs, and had quite a few secondary vehicles.

Myself and the other players on the server coordinated a plan. I loaded up four 500 pounders and climbed over the mountain peak overlooking the HQ. The other guys approached the valley head-on with standard rockets and Vikhr.

On a signal, they went in, drawing the AAA fire. At the same time, I came over the top of the mountain, dumped the collective, and dove straight down into the HQ. I got a IAS overspeed warning almost immediately. The cliff was near-vertical, and that was pretty much my attitude. Using the standby HUD display, I aimed at the center of the HQ and unloaded the first pair of bombs.

The trouble came in selecting the second pair. I took too long in fiddling with them, and by the time I selected them I was too low. I pulled out too hard, too low, and sheared off my own rotor blades from the G-forces. No time to eject. I think, had I been more efficient with my weapon management, I would likely have survived. I never even managed to unload the second pair.

So, I'm dead. What about the enemy? Right away, I get a couple of vehicle kills. I'm disappointed. I mean, hell, I could have sworn I had dropped those 500 pounders right into the middle of everything! All that for nothing...

Well, over the next minute, nearly ten more vehicles damaged by my bombs proceed to explode. The top half of my screen fills up with kill messages. I took out a lot of the AAA, the SAMs, and a lot of the support vehicles. Then my fellow players move in to mop up what's left.

As one put it: "Nice sacrifice!" I guess you could say I "Took one for the team." :)

So, to answer the OP, bombs are very effective - but only in certain situations.

How many guys did you have on that mission with you Wicked?

Before coming to work I tried to set up a mission with my wingmen, but I need to work out the wingman controls as well before I can actually see how it all works. We'd all take off, but they would end up flying AWAY from the target area and wouldn't come back.

There were three other guys on the server. All strangers, but we kept trying to peck away at that HQ individually and getting shot up. So, we coordinated.

One guy took on the role of leader. Every one else would form up on him outside the valley. I took my position at the top of the mountain, and watched his - and everyone else's - position on the datalink. The attack "signal" was simply to watch for when he advanced. When I saw him move, I'd make my move. And that's how it played out.

The next time Betting, you'll use U to select "all stations" before dropping :)

On routine application of helos as bombers:

Lebarmyhueybomber.jpg

From the wikipedia page on the lebanese air force. After the wars, civil wars, invasions and so on they didn't have much left in the vein of fixed wing, but they did have bombs. And they did have hueys. So... :D

This was apparently used during the 2007 conflict.

Just spent this evening playing around with a wing-man and he (obviously) pretty expert in his weapon skills.

After receiving orders, he broke from formation and headed out a bit then commenced his run in. From a shallow dive he let go of 2 500 pound bombs that proceeded downwards to ignite a fuel truck. I must admit it looked pretty watching him do it. I just wish my skills were the same as his ...
