I recently finished this campaign and felt like writing a short review here. If you’re on the fence about it, don’t hesitate and get it.

My recent foray into warbirds started with the P47 and while I’ve found the airplane to be tricky to learn it remains my favorite of the bunch. Diving into this campaign, I was not a great thunderbolt pilot. I feel quite a lot more competent after finishing the last mission. It was especially interesting to fly the early p47, as I got used to the later variants with the gyro gunsight.

At first climbing in formation was tough. The DCS AI is very aggressive and you need to be ready for their “here we go” behavior. @Reflected has a great tutorial on it, but even after that I feel it took more than a bit of practice to get it right. I do confirm what Reflected says: it’s not easy but it is definitely doable without blowing up your engine. Just make sure to warm it up properly and fly at optimum climbing speed. No need for water injection or anything. I do feel more comfortable flying off the squadron lead as this is the most stable AI. The others sometimes shift around which doesn’t help to keep a steady climb.

What struck me most when reading the briefing and what stuck with me throughout the campaign is the advice to not try to be a hero but to survive. I tried, I really did, but ended up bailing out once and having to fly that mission again. Reason enough to play the campaign again, without becoming a POW. Other than that one slip up, I flew cautiously and sure thing I did not become an ace. 3 registered kills and 1 I didn’t understand was not given to me, I felt a sense of accomplishment nonetheless. Being part of the effort was just as good.

All in all, I can’t recommend this enough. I’m well into the next one, Beware! Beware! for the Spitfire and it’s turning out to be an equally fun ride. Reflected has built these campaigns extremely well. You feel like you are there but you are just one of the pieces of a very large puzzle. Other campaigns sometimes feel like an arcade game, these feel very real without keeping you out of the action: almost always will you be able to get yourself into trouble if you want to. Great work and I really hope the sequel will be developed!
