When I setup any mission that requires me to launch ATGMs against any target I have issues flying the KA-50 safely into the launch parameters of the Vikhr ATGM. So I have a question:

There are two circles on the HUD when I'm about the fire an ATGM. There is where my reticule is pointing on the shkval and a second circle (I forget what its called). Do I have to keep this second circle reticule over what I've designated to fire the Vikhr?

It seems like only when the two reticules are lined up that I can fire the Vikhr. The issue I have been having is that I put myself into dangerous situations trying to get the reticules lined up.

(Dangerous situations being that at certian altitudes I end up having to pitch my aircraft at extreme angles which at one point caused my rotors to simply break off.)

*sigh* How about reading the manual?

Yes, you have to line them up to launch the missile - you can turn away after you do so, as long as you don't do that too violently.

Next time plan your attack better, so you don't have to do ridiculous pitching at high speeds and whatnot ;)

You need to align yourself horizontally, but not that much vertically.

The Shkval launchers are gimballed - so they can adjust themselves up&down.

So in principal you need to aim the nose at the target - horizontal, and you should get the launch allowed "C" on your hud.

If I were you, I'll watch the producer notes fromthe main webbie...

no.. you need to keep it locked on via the screen/laser.

EDIT: damn im a slow typer.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

I did read the manual. I couldn't seem to find exactly what I was looking for in the manual, so I asked the question on the forums. I at least try to look for an answer before I go asking for help. :P

Thanks for the help, and I should probably plan my attack better. That seems to make sense.

Yup, steep angles and high speeds for Vikhr passes are bad for you :)

Are you sure that it's switched on to auto target mode rather than fixed? I think it's the switch next to the laser & HMS ones one at the bottom.

With auto target the reticle tracks the relevant vertical alignment (within reason) leaving you to just tap the rudder to line up your horizontal alignment. A fixed reticle would mean firing viks would be similar to unguided rockets! I don't think I've hit anything threatening with a rocket yet .

Apologies for the poor terminology, please someone correct, but could this be a factor? Or is that switch relating to cannon only.

Certainly firing Vik's should never be as hard as how you describe Wags. I'm rubbish and I can do it every time!

Yes, I am using auto target mode. I believe it's the "Q" key.

I've gotten better at it. I just wasn't planning my attack well enough so I was having issues launching my weapons. I recently made a few missions and those went well as I actually thought out my plan of attack. ;)

I find that with the "auto turn" button on (the one on the top left, I forget the name) that the shark lines those reticules up almost by itself when in a nice hover.

Nifty ;)

tip: 99% of the time they're best to use when hovering. just make slight adjustments on the collective and rudder to align both reticules. it's a lot harding to adjust the nose when moving, which is the case with going fast and firing
