DD_Crash Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I am going to build a new computer and would like to know how many cores does DCS need for VR.
SharpeXB Posted May 5 Posted May 5 (edited) As many as you can get . If I understand the Multithreaded system here it will use anything you have. I think up to 32 virtual cores. There used to be a Multithreading FAQ topic that explains this but maybe it’s been moved or deleted. If you are on a budget the 5800x3d is good. A better option (at twice the cost) is the 9800x3d. 1 1 PC specs: 9800x3d - rtx5080 FE - 64GB RAM 6000MHz - 2Tb NVME - (for posts before March 2025: 5800x3d - rtx 4070) - VR headsets Quest Pro (Jan 2024-present; Pico 4 March 2023 - March 2024; Rift s June 2020- present). Maps Afghanistan – Channel – Cold War Germany - Kola - Normandy 2 – Persian Gulf - Sinai - Syria - South Atlantic. Modules BF-109 - FW-190 A8 - F4U - F4E - F5 - F14 - F16 - F86 - I16 - Mig 15 - Mig 21 - Mosquito - P47 - P51 - Spitfire.
DD_Crash Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 Thanks, I was thinking the 9800x3d would be the best bet. 1
Mr_sukebe Posted May 5 Posted May 5 (edited) I’m curious about other pilots experience on this. When I’ve checked CPU usage in the last few weeks, the primary loading appears to be on 4 cores. Thats not to say that more cores is pointless, as they can offload secondary tasks such as Oculus VR and various windows apps. it does however make me wonder if ED have optimised the current build for use with 4 cores, as pretty much all DCS player PCs will have at least 4. If that is the case, makes me wonder about the effort required to use 8 cores, which is seemingly becoming the norm.
