Ivandrov Posted Sunday at 02:21 PM Posted Sunday at 02:21 PM (edited) Eh, I find this to be kind of confusing. What's with the numbered -21 flying through the search areas? The way it's labeled makes it seem like bars are your azimuth. TWS is shown as if it doesn't have a +-40 mode, which it does. STT is shown only in its pulse mode and as a search mode with an azimuth which is not correct. I don't really know what the VSL graphic is supposed to be showing. It doesn't really explain how it works at all. You are also missing PAL and Supersearch. Edited Sunday at 02:29 PM by Ivandrov 1
RustBelt Posted Monday at 01:53 AM Posted Monday at 01:53 AM What source is this? Those are some handy pictures.

It is taken from book 「The great book of modern airplanes」 PAL was introduced later, maybe book author didnt have info at that time. Edited Monday at 04:27 AM by wwWolfcom

DD_Fenrir Posted Monday at 08:58 AM Posted Monday at 08:58 AM (edited) For clarity here are the originals with further details and annotations that explain some of the shown information, including a representation of the DDD showing how the MiG-21 referenced bricks should appear: Edited Monday at 01:05 PM by DD_Fenrir 3
RustBelt Posted Monday at 10:21 PM Posted Monday at 10:21 PM Bought from AbeBooks. Still a few copies used there.
WarthogOsl Posted yesterday at 08:13 AM Posted yesterday at 08:13 AM Fwiw, most of these graphics appeared, in their original form, in James Perry Stevenson's "F-14 Tomcat," from around 1975.
Ivandrov Posted yesterday at 02:28 PM Posted yesterday at 02:28 PM (edited) We've had three different books mentioned as the original source for these diagrams, which one is it? Edited yesterday at 02:28 PM by Ivandrov

The book my Father’s work is in was published in 1985. Given that he is not an expert in radar systems or avionics, I suspect the Stevenson book material was used as reference and redrawn. Salamander produced a large variety of military aviation books during the 80’s; it would not surprise me that these drawings would be leveraged across other tomes, or sold to other publishers for use. 1

I think some were taken directly from Navy, Grumman, or Hughes sources. Some appear to have been redrawn in a slightly different style, presumably based on those sources. Here's an example from Stevenson's book, which is credited to U.S. Navy: 1
