Visual particle effect missing for the self-destruct burst effect of cannon rounds 20mm and most AAA flak ETC

Description:
When engaging or observing medium-caliber anti-aircraft fire (estimated 20mm–80mm), the self-destruction of rounds in mid-air produces audio cues and shockwave effects, but no accompanying visual explosion or flak puff. This results in a jarring inconsistency during engagements, as you can hear and feel the detonation, but nothing visually manifests in the expected location.

 

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Spawn a mission with AAA units (e.g. ZU-23, Shilka, etc.) firing at aircraft.
  2. Observe the flak rounds as they reach their time-of-flight limits and detonate.
  3. Note that audio and sometimes screen shake are present, but no smoke/flak visual effect appears at the detonation point.

 

Expected Behavior:
A visible flak explosion (typically a small puff or fireball) should appear at the location of round self-destruction, consistent with the accompanying sound and shockwave cues.

You're going to have a lot better luck getting any action on this if you add a short track file of it occurring.  Preferred would be on Caucasus map.  Needs to be NO MODS.  You can save a track file from the debrief window after you finish the mission.

Describing how to reproduce is great, but there are so many other factors not accounted (i.e. settings).  Track file ensures they are at least trying it same way (and the devs have other tools that they can use with trackfiles to dig deeper) and rules out a core flaw if they can't reproduce.

Tested on the Caucasus map with absolutely no mods installed. I’ve noticed a discrepancy in how AAA units display visual flak effects at round self-destruction range:

  • Working as expected:
    • S-60 57mm AAA
    • ZSU-57-2
  • Missing flak effects:
  • Bofors 40mm
  • ZSU-23-4 "Shilka"
  • (Possibly others — I’m still testing)
  • Essex class carrier (specifically the quadruple mount 40mm Bofors AAA guns) 

Reproduction Steps:

  1. Spawn affected AAA units on the Caucasus map.
  2. Set them to fire at air targets beyond effective range (to trigger self-destruction behavior).
  3. Observe round end behavior — units like the S-60 produce visible flak, while others like the Bofors and ZSU-23/4 do not.
