taffy001 Posted Thursday at 01:55 AM Posted Thursday at 01:55 AM HI All, A bit of an update to my previous question on the 17th of June - below is my original problem/question. I also put this on the installation problem pages, so apologies if you see it twice but desperate for help Hi Guys, need a bit of advice. Old drive was getting full so could not add latest update. So just moved my DCS install to another drive (2TB SSD), used copy / paste as advised. Also moved the Saved games folder through windows process. And changed the shortcuts. All worked and can access DCS (takes a fair bit of time to load though). However is very laggy in VR and on triple screens (was not like this before). Went back and ran it from the original folder and works well as always. So checked again but still laggy on the moved install. Any suggestions or ideas on what this may be ?? Thanks Taffy So finally gave up on this after numerous trial and error checks / repair Slow and fast etc. So bit the bullet and did a re-install from scratch. So just installed the basic DCS World and downloaded the F/A 18 (nothing else and planned to go through a download by download process (all on a brand new 2TB external SSD). However just launched with the F/A 18 out of the Caucases ? .. and exactly the same fault as before. Laggy as hell just on triple screens (not even tried VR yet). So I seem to be back at square one with just the basic install and one aircraft. Had a look at the log file and quite a few errors and warnings. I am not capable of working out the protential problems, but have attached the log file if anyone can have a look and see what they think. Any help would be great as it's driving me insane (current system is Win 10, Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz, 32 GB Ram and a GTX 3080 graphics card) All of which work great with MSFS 2020 and iRacing) Thanks in advance. dcs - Copy.log
scommander2 Posted Thursday at 04:04 AM Posted Thursday at 04:04 AM (edited) A quick question: the CPU has 10 cores, is it right? Another question, what was the memory usage while running DCS since there is 32G memory? Have tried to increase the size of the paging size? taffy001 Posted Thursday at 04:41 AM Author Posted Thursday at 04:41 AM Good Questions, I'll have have a look at tis - not sure exactly how but will investigate Thanks
taffy001 Posted Thursday at 05:08 AM Author Posted Thursday at 05:08 AM Thanks scommander2 - did some checking and this is what I found: my CPU has 5 cores Paging size is running at 4864 accross all drives - is that enough etc ?? Memory use - maybe this is interesting - just taxing the F/A 18 as follows CPU percentage at 66% - 76% Memory at 7640MB (50%) GPU useage 60% Power useage at High to Very Hign (in the RED) All that seems high to me for just 1 x aircraft taxing at Medium details - but I'm not aware of how this compares Your thoughts
Smashy Posted Thursday at 12:30 PM Posted Thursday at 12:30 PM Based on your comment on how the problem follows the new drive, I suspect the problem is caused by the new drive being much slower than the original drive. You said the new drive is external so that's another strike against it. Try running a disk benchmark against both drives to verify performance. 1
scommander2 Posted Thursday at 12:40 PM Posted Thursday at 12:40 PM (edited) A good catch the "external" drive... Try CrystalDiskMark for the disk benchmark... EDIT: I checked the Intel website for i9-10900K, and it reports 10 cores/20 threads, not sure Windows reported correctly... I am wondering the cores got disabled by Windows according to the following doc: Why Does my System Have Fewer or Missing Cores? jef32 Posted Thursday at 03:18 PM Posted Thursday at 03:18 PM (edited) Hi I recently change my computer and I have a I7 core ultra 7 265K now with a 5080 Gigabytes. And at the beginning, I was very disapointed by the poor performances of DCS (more bad than with my old computer) and these lags you're talking about. Now I have around 90fps in VR ( MQ3) with 1.4 pixels without reprojection and around 60-70fps above Berlin at low altitude, in DLSS mode set on quality and without these lags with cursors on the right. But for that, I was forced to use an affinity mask in the DCS launch command and using just physical cores ( 0,1,6,7,8,9,18,19 for my CPU). So try the good combination using this link: https://bitsum.com/tools/cpu-affinity-calculator/ and install "process lasso" just to know which cores are physicals (see the bargraph in process lasso at the right top and choose only the cores marked with a little sign to calculate the affinity mask) then create the launch command as this one: "G:\DCS World\bin-mt\DCS.exe" --affinity=XXXXXX ( with XXXXXX given by the cpu-affinity-calculator site). For me, since that, DCS is a real pleasure waiting that ED decides to fix this issue forcing players to use an affinity mask to use DCS without lags. taffy001 Posted Thursday at 11:07 PM Author Posted Thursday at 11:07 PM Thanks Guys, I will take a look at all your suggestions and see how I get on. I might try re-installing the basic DCS on the original internal drive (I have plenty of room without all the add-on mods etc) as it was working perfectly well then. It's only since I made the change to the new external SSD that I have had the problems - that might highlight (or not) a problem with the new external drive. Thanks again, much appreciate the info - I'll keep you informed
rob10 Posted yesterday at 12:06 AM Posted yesterday at 12:06 AM It's not a "problem with the external drive" per se, it's the fact that it IS an external drive which is almost always going to mean it is (much) slow transferring data to your motherboard. 1
taffy001 Posted yesterday at 01:44 AM Author Posted yesterday at 01:44 AM Hi Guys, I think you might have solved it !!! Well had a few spare minutes this morning and downloaded the Crystal Mark disk benchmark program and did a few test - so here they are: Drive D - 1TB internal SSD (DCS previously installed on here) 3 or 4 tests (I don't know why they drop throughout the tests) Read 562 / 534 / 385 / 37 Write 531 / 517 / 354 / 121 Drive H - 2TB external SSD (MSFS2020 installed on here) Read 468 / 453 218 / 35 Write 448 / 430 / 187 / 35 Drive F - Brand new 2TB SSD - (this is where I am trying to install DCS and having issues) Read 72 / 59 / 1.33 / 0.41 Write 77 / 69 / 0.83 / 0.58 Looks like this SSD is not working correctly as just way below the other drive speeds. Just to confirm with you if this looks like the problem - I will take it back and get a new one to try Your thoughts please Thanks
scommander2 Posted yesterday at 02:51 AM Posted yesterday at 02:51 AM Drive F definitely is too slow to load the big data for sure. 1 Spoiler Dell XPS 9730, i9-13900H, DDR5 64GB, Discrete GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, 1+2TB M.2 SSD | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + TPR | TKIR5/TrackClipPro | Total Controls Multi-Function Button Box | Win 11 Pro
Smashy Posted yesterday at 03:19 AM Posted yesterday at 03:19 AM Good to hear. You might try experimenting with different USB ports before exchanging the drive. Also see if there are any firmware updates available from the manufacturer. I had an SSD that was performing terribly until I saw that an update had been released to address that specific problem. 1
taffy001 Posted yesterday at 04:40 AM Author Posted yesterday at 04:40 AM Ok will check that out first Regards

No need. Just copy the whole folder from the other drive, copy/edit all relevant shortcuts and perform a repair. Will save you some time. Cheers! 1
scommander2 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago What type of USB is the drive F connects with? USB 2.0 (guessing)? Compare with the USB type for the drive H? taffy001 Posted 2 hours ago Author Posted 2 hours ago Hi Guys - an update. But first, a big thank you for all your comments and suggestions - WE HAVE IT FIXED (hopefully) Went back and checked the 'dodgy' SSD on another USB port (original USB port was a USB 3.0 so should have been OK) - same slow rating with Crystal Mark. I also had another of the same SSDs (bought them on discount for the pair) - is being used just as additional back up drive on my wife's PC. Same slow rating on Crystal Mark. Does work fine as a back up file drive anyway - so looks like the wife gets another one. They are a Seagate 2TB SSD so you would think OK. However, maybe the discounted price was for a reason !!! For info Drive H has a USB-C connection and works great. So, copied (as suggested) DCS folder back onto the original Drive D internal SSD. Did a slow repair, edited relevant shortcuts etc ...... and it worked just GREAT. Much quicker loading, runs as smooth as silk, no stuttering or lagging in both triple screens and VR .. I am in love with DCS again. So looked like those SSDs are just not up to the demands of DCS. So have placed an order for an ADATA Elite SE880 USB-C Portable SSD 2TB Drive. Specs seem to indicate that will do it. so once that arrives will copy over to that SSD and start to reinstall all those maps and modules waiting for me. So once again, thanks
