A friend of mine asked me to design a computer for him to play Digital Combat Simulator. Something able to run on ultra wide monitor with good quality.

I came up with the below build, but I'm not sure if this will handle the monitor I suggest there. The suggested budget was 2k for the computer + 1.5k for the monitor. Weight of the prices can be cahnged, ofc.

Agreed, especially larger.  I was told to keep speeds up, put the sims on the drive with the O/S.  I have BMS, DCS, MSFS, and IL2, and I went with 4TB M2 SSD.

@axas  I really struggled with the GPU pick: AMD or NVIDIA.  Studied it and agonized for over a year.  I had an AMD for 7-8 years, but I always ran into NVIDIA's tech being factored into code first...leaving me always behind and wanting more.  For my latest build this spring, I went with NVIDIA GPU, primarily because 3 custom gaming PC firms advised me to go high-end NVIDIA.

BTW, I went with an AMD CPU, which was also highly recommended.  I'm not regretting either decision so far.

What do you suggest when comparing to the 7900 XTX?

Does the rest of the build look good? (besides the 1TB ssd)

I'm not an expert on the GPUs, at least not iterations within a series.  I've read enough good about the NVIDIA 4xxx series, but somebody else would have to comment.  I went best of breed, just to keep me from having to agonize over this decision.  My PC maker helped confirm this for future-proofing...I want to get 5-6 years out of this rig, if not more.

I went with 1000W power supply cuz my 800W wasn't enough for what I was running on my old system, so I stayed with that size on my new rig.

The rest looks good for your price range, IMHO.

A 9800X3D is selling on Amazon for USD $449, i.e. $74 dollars more than a 7800X3D. At that price diff, why would you go for the last gen Zen 4 as opposed to Zen 5 stuff?

For a €3128.20 machine... adding USD$74 shouldn't be a problem, right?

Can't comment on the brand but 32GB is an absolute minimum these days.
DCS uses up more than 50GB on the CW Germany map...
It will not take long before 64GB will be the minimum.

For a new build, I’d go for 64GB at a minimum. 96 or 128 if you want to be safe for the next 5-10 years.

And yes, a 9800X3D is significantly better than a 7800X3D. But it depends on availability/price in your region.

Thank you all for the replies, as I said this is for a friend. I had no idea of the game, made some searches but with your inputs in came to an understanding that it consumes a lot of ram.

Changed the RAM and went for 2TB.

Also took a look into the CPU, switched to the 9800X3D. For the GPU I still have the same, it should do the work right?

Also, is this monitor good for this game?

Well, for a SIM a monitor can never be too large 😀 I play DCS with the 57" version of the Odyssey since Nov 24. Looking now at a normal 27" monitor seems like looking into a narrow tunnel. You get used to a larger monitors pretty quick and if there will be even wider monitors available sometimes I am a potential customer.

An 850 W power supply will probably not be enough.

Why not? A 9800X3D is not that power hungry, and a 7900XTX isn't either. You can stuff a 5080 in there and 850W will still be plenty. I prefer 1000W and I have used one for ages, but that doesn't mean it isn't overkill.
850W isn't enough for a 4090 or 5090, but anything else should be fine as long as you don't put a dozen harddrives in there as well.

850w is definitely enough (when buying a good reliable PSU). Even if you sum max W consumption of all components it’ll be below 850w, and anyway even when gaming the computer is not gonna run at max power draw all the time.

SSD I would go for something even bigger. Personally I like to have Windows on a separate drive (I have a 1tb drive just for OS and some apps) and another drive for games. 2tb might be ok if it’s just for DCS and you don’t have too many modules, but space gets filled up pretty quickly especially with the latest maps. Also consider that on a 2tb drive you will have about 1.8tb of real capacity.

Motherboard is fine, but if you can find a good b850 (like the msi b850 tomahawk) for not too much more, you might consider it.

Video card is a tough choice, if you need 24gb of vram there are not too many choices, actually it’s the only choice in that price range. Again, if it’s just for DCS it’s a good card, but it doesn’t avail of latest tech you can find in newer cards.

64gb cl30 RAM is a good choice, dcs is very ram-hungry, the more you throw at it the better, especially if playing in multiplayer. I use all my 96gb at times.

I’m not particularly familiar with monitors, but the one you suggested seems to have some very good specs….even too good for just DCS, I mean you don’t really need 240hz for playing dcs or flight sims, and anyway you will not reach 240fps at high settings in 5120 x 1440 (it’s almost as demanding as 4k). You might find a less expensive monitor but with the same size and resolution, but lower Hz (144hz is already more than enough, and even less will be perfectly fine). With the price difference you could upgrade the above components.
