Noticed my engine dying after a steep dive and large speed gain when I'd try and climb again.  Have been keeping the cowl flaps open about 20% at all times to avoid the CYL Temps overheating, but it appears that if you get enough speed it pushes the flaps stay closed?  F4U1D didn't have any automated flap management or hydraulics to re-open them?

Guess it's on the pilot to remember to re-open flaps after going above 300 knots or cook your engine?

The flaps were designed to be able to blow closed if you exceeded their airspeed limits.

Correct, this one gets me every now and then as well.  I’m getting better about it.

Follow the dive checklist from the POH prior to entering the dive, and it has you consciously close them, which helps to remember to reopen them after the dive is complete.

I wonder how many people actually follow all those instructions in combat, lol.

I do ... practice them a lot on training first ... what's the point of having an accurate simulation if then we go and pilot the aircraft like it were a car?
