Stevecat Posted yesterday at 02:34 AM Posted yesterday at 02:34 AM (edited) Little background: Long time IL-2'er who got DCS Warbirds a couple years ago to see what it was all about. First plane, probably stupidly, was the K4. Not a quitter, so I stuck it out. But alas, the constant OP engine torque and the crappy old version of the Normandy map wore me out. I put DCS away until June when the F4U came out. Oh goody, now I get to play Ba Ba Black Sheep like I always wanted to as a kid. Well the F4U left a little on the table too, so I'm thinking, back to IL-2 until they fix this baby up. I did like Normandy 2.0 though. But then I see, almost by mistake, hey - I own the D9 too? when did I get that? I must have been drinking again. I see Greg flying Fw's on YouTube and he makes it look so easy - I mean, probabaly not for me, I suck - ok then, lets give it a try. Holy Sh*t!!! Where to begin. In the last two hours I have all the keybinds. Took off and landed on the first flight no issues, I can actually shoot stuff down. It has an MW50 system that is easy to understand, deploy, and it appears to actually work (vs. the K4). Even better, the annoying left wing stall we all love about the Fw, ever so present in the IL-2 version, is wayyyyy more manageable here. I was doing rolls and turns in the DCS D9 that I would never even think of in the IL-2 version. What, I can actually dogfight PvP in a D-9? More to come on that. I have to be honest, between the K4 and the F4U I was starting to think DCS Warbirds was either a total <profanity>show, or I am still a horrible sim pilot. But the D9 and it's smoothy smooth, super fun flight model have shown me the light. Maybe it's just that the K4 and the F4U make the D9 look like a thoroughbred, or is this the best Axis plane in DCS? Or any other flight sim for that matter. Oh yeah, and that engine sound. wow. Doughguy Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Well, the k4 and f4u are total different birds compared to the D9, which is rather similar to the anton. The k4 is nimble and turns well, but is rather shakey. and the corsair behaves similar to a p47, being a pregnant cow. I fly the D9 almost exclusively and have little problems against other planes tbh. With the right tactics of course. https://www.youtube.com/@oinkpoink My collection of D9 flights on Project overlord so far. Commented videos. 1 1 https://sr-f.de/

I have tried the D9 a few times but have not bought it. I just couldn't get to grips with it. The K4 is my favorite warbird. I'm not sure why but I got the hang of it really quickly. I love flying it. I struggle with the A8 and the p47. I'm enjoying the F4U but not there yet. I might give the D9 another go. 1 PC specs: 9800x3d - rtx5080 FE - 64GB RAM 6000MHz - 2Tb NVME - (for posts before March 2025: 5800x3d - rtx 4070) - VR headsets Quest Pro (Jan 2024-present; Pico 4 March 2023 - March 2024; Rift s June 2020- present). Kang Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Not so sure about it being much of a secret, but the FW-190D9 surely is one of the most capable German planes of the war. Probably a lot less guesswork and what-if involved in the module as well, compared to some others. While I haven't had the chance to give it a spin myself yet, I always thought, though, that the F4U in its tactical employment could be considered a bit of a Pacific FW190. That might sound bizarre, so let me explain: they are both quite nimble, mostly in roll and not in circle radius, they both excel at going fast and climbing away from danger, and they both boast devastating firepower, compared to the sturdiness of their respective targets. Overall I find the warbird experience in DCS a bit lackluster on the whole, though, especially considering its comparably high step of entrance. 1
kablamoman Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago If you really like the D9’s flight model compared to the K4, I’d highly encourage you to give the free TF-51 module a try, and if you like it, to fork out some cash for the P-51. I think the FM is even better than the D9, and one of the best available for any sim. The Mustang and Dora are my two favorite of the DCS warbird offerings. 1
_JMax Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) I really like the Dora too. Initially I was a little disappointed in my combat results, until I heard Greg say(pretty sure it was Greg) that if you're in the Dora, you have no business trying to turn fight most fighters. The P47 is fair game though. And the key to the Dora, for me, is to keep your speed high and quit pulling back on the stick. It will fly beautifully.
