MBot Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Here is my first mission after the 1.01 patch. Follow the instructions of your FAC and provide CAS for your troops in a close contact situation. Includes a SP and a MP version for 2 pilots. http://cid-f33d8b1019e6f4ac.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/DangerClose.zip It is a rather simple mission but still quite challenging. I can't complete the mission objective on every try but by using a some planing and fair thought you should have a reasonable chance to do good. Some basic knowledge about FAC-CAS procedures might be handy. I have been trying to get most out of the tools that BS provides but as the designer one knows the mission setup and you can't be sure how "unknowing" people will approach the scenario. So please let me know if the FAC-CAS mechanics were playable and fun to you. Some tips: -Please be aware that the actual units placed on the ground are a result of building the FAC-CAS mechanic in the editor and are therefore an abstraction. You should approach the mission objective not by killing individual units but to put firepower on a coordinate on the ground as described by the FAC. -Pay good attention to the infos you get by the FAC. It might be a good idea to have pen and paper ready to drop down some notes (A-10 CAS pilots often write notes on their canopies by grease pencil). -Try to remember the exact terrain position you put your fire on, so you can adjust from there on your next run according to the FACs instructions. I guess in MP with 2 players it will work quite well for the wingman by observing the attack run of the leader. -You might overestimate distances on the ground. As a reference, the smoke mark is about 30m tall.
Kurtz Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I can seem to DL this from Skydrive? anyone else having trouble?
Rhino4 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) Just dl'd it. Can't wait to try it. Mbot's missions are consistently high-standard. EDIT: Done playing it. Like the FAC interplay. Would be better if you had two different voices doing it. Mission was bloody hard, considering nothing shot at me. Almost impossible with scenes on high. So many trees it's hard to keep track of which ones you shot at last. I'd love to see this same scenario involving buildings in a large city, Iraq style. Edited August 17, 2009 by Rhino4

Kurtz Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I flew this last night in multiplay and quite enjoyed the lead in comms to target. After that though I found that the AI never reacted to threat and was wondering if that is correct or perhaps I missed a trigger or something?
MBot Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 If with AI you mean the enemy ground troops, yes it is basically correct. The infantry is set up so that they should engage but for some strange reason they will only engage a helicopter if it almost lands next to them. Anyway for the purpose of the mission it is no big deal in my oppionion, as the emphasis of the mission is to hit a specified piece of forrest. Some returning small arms fire would have been nice, but wouldn't have changed the primary challenge.
Kurtz Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Ok thanks MBot, overall it wasnt a bad trainer mission I thought. After locating the smoke marker I used the arc to correct my heading and laser to range target from smoke. Which allowed us to get rockets on target. To bad there wasnt any active manpads to keep us on our toes. The mission needed a little more fireworks thats all. Thanks for posting anyhow, as we enjoyed the talk in to target and the overall mission concept was great.
-Painter- Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Some basic knowledge about FAC-CAS procedures might be handy....do you know a good source which provides some knowledge about that topic, including phraseology to be used? Regards REAPER 31 | Painter [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
MBot Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 Thanks for your feedback Kurtz. ...do you know a good source which provides some knowledge about that topic, including phraseology to be used? http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_092h.html Here is a great section about FAC-CAS in the SimHQ Article "Hog Basics: RAF Bentwaters Tactics Guide, 1982". I also suggest to read the rest of the guide, a great read and some good preparations for DCS: A-10 ;)
-Painter- Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Great! Thank you! That is what I asked for. Regards REAPER 31 | Painter [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
