pari Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on which VR headset to buy mainly for DCS. I’ve seen the Meta Quest 3S, which is within my budget, but I’ve read that the visual quality isn’t that great. The Quest 3 (normal) is out of my budget, so now I’m considering either a brand new Pico 4 (base model) or a used Pico 4 Ultra — though I’m not 100% comfortable with buying used gear. For reference, my PC specs are: Intel i7-9700K overclocked to 4.6GHz, RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, and 32GB of RAM. Which option do you think would give me the best VR experience?
Raven (Elysian Angel) Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago When you don’t have a (very) high end system, I’d avoid headsets with very high resolution/PPD (pixels per degree). Something with similar specs as a Reverb G2 for example should work quite well Spoiler Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 96GB G.Skill Ripjaws M5 Neo DDR5-6000 | Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super | ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E GAMING | Samsung 990Pro 2TB + 990Pro 4TB NMVe | VR: Varjo Aero VPC MT-50CM2 grip on VPForce Rhino with Z-curve extension | VPC CM3 throttle | VPC CP2 + 3 | FSSB R3L | VPC Rotor TCS Plus base with SharKa-50 grip | Everything mounted on Monstertech MFC-1 | VPC R1-Falcon pedals with damper | Pro Flight Trainer Puma OpenXR | PD 1.0 | 100% render resolution | DCS graphics settings Win11 Pro 24H2 - VBS/HAGS/Game Mode ON
pari Posted 4 hours ago Author Posted 4 hours ago Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve looked into the Reverb G2, but it has roughly the same resolution as the Pico 4, so it wouldn’t really improve visual quality. Also, I think it would go over my budget.
Gun Jam Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago I would hang onto what you've got now and keep saving up. Nothing in going to really give you much improvement. You will have much better success saving for a while and picking up a used unit later on when they become more available and you have more to spend. A used BSB2 9 months from now might be interesting for you.... perhaps

Personally I’d consider higher framerate on a lower-resolution headset a better VR experience than 20-30 fps with a headset that gives you better visuals. I didn’t mean to suggest the G2 specifically, but ‘a’ headset with similar resolutions because I know the type of system that is needed to run it. So my suggestion would be to not aim too high, but you said you have a budget you want to respect so that’s a good guideline. I wouldn’t be comfortable with a used VR headset either. At the very least it would have to come with a brand new headband since that absorbs quite a lot of sweat. You get where I’m going with this Spoiler Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 96GB G.Skill Ripjaws M5 Neo DDR5-6000 | Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super | ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E GAMING | Samsung 990Pro 2TB + 990Pro 4TB NMVe | VR: Varjo Aero VPC MT-50CM2 grip on VPForce Rhino with Z-curve extension | VPC CM3 throttle | VPC CP2 + 3 | FSSB R3L | VPC Rotor TCS Plus base with SharKa-50 grip | Everything mounted on Monstertech MFC-1 | VPC R1-Falcon pedals with damper | Pro Flight Trainer Puma OpenXR | PD 1.0 | 100% render resolution | DCS graphics settings Win11 Pro 24H2 - VBS/HAGS/Game Mode ON
Baldrick33 Posted 40 minutes ago Posted 40 minutes ago Personally I still prefer the Reverb G2 (or even G1) to headsets that rely on streaming be it wired (USB) or wireless to connect to the PC. That includes the Q3 which although has greater clarity edge to edge (great for viewing instruments) the image quality falls down as you look further ahead and performance doesn’t match the G2. Even the Q3S stutters in comparison, in spite of a 800+Mb/s dedicated Wi-Fi connection. I mention the G1 as its lenses are optimised for a much lower resolution than the G2, which is great for lower powered PCs. After I burnt the screen with sunlight I bought a replacement G1 off eBay but I already had a VRcover faceplate which I could use. That said a good anti bac clean should suffice I would have thought. G1s and G2s are quite cheap on eBay although the Oasis driver which allows them to run with the latest Windows may increase their popularity as they will no longer be deemed obsolete going forward.
