GGTharos Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Not surprising - think about it... experiments with IR AAMs have been done on a lot of helicopters. However the only ones that currently carry them operationally are the Marine AH-1's (Sidewinders) and Army OH-58D's (Stingers) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
topol-m Posted August 22, 2009 Author Posted August 22, 2009 Yep, probably that`s the case. I wonder though if they plan to make them fully operational on mi-28. Oh and why put them on the outer pylons, AAMs + ATGMs better than AAMs + rockets :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Vekkinho Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 ^^^ http://pabel89.users.photofile.ru/photo/pabel89/150136456/xlarge/154499575.jpg  Picture from Maks 2009 But that's not news, IIRC it's in inventory ever since Havoc (N). [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Topol its probably just for show. I'm sure they'll arrange the payload better for operations :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
topol-m Posted August 22, 2009 Author Posted August 22, 2009 (edited) But that's not news, IIRC it's in inventory ever since Havoc (N). Well, there are similar discussions about that including in this forum. Several sources mention it in the mi-28`s (the same case with ka-50/52) inventory but the question is is it fully operational, are these AAMs in service or there are just a few used for tests/experiments. As Tharos said the only plausible info is about AH-1s and OH-58Ds. AAMs use is studied in China, Japan, Europe, etc. but AFAIK there is no official info about such missiles entering mass production and equipping the helicopter fleet with them in large numbers. Occasionally some photo of a heli armed with AAMs appears but that`s all :) Edited August 22, 2009 by topol-m [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Zulu Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 I know the Rooivalk can carry AAMs it has a set of pylons just for them To INVENT an Airplane is Nothing. To BUILD One is Something. But to FLYis EVERYTHING. - Otto Lilienthal [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Oh and why put them on the outer pylons, AAMs + ATGMs better than AAMs + rockets :) Maybe it's an interface thing, like the Ka-50 can only carry ATGMs on the outer pylons and "dumb" stores on the inner. Mugatu Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Tiger HAPs do too, Mistrals... Not surprising - think about it... experiments with IR AAMs have been done on a lot of helicopters. topol-m Posted August 23, 2009 Author Posted August 23, 2009 Tiger HAPs do too, Mistrals... One think is the ability to carry them another is the possibility to use them. This requires the targeting system to be adapted for use of AAMs. It`s probably not so difficult to accomplish the question is how many of the helis we see carrying AAMs have already recieved such modifications. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
topol-m Posted August 23, 2009 Author Posted August 23, 2009 Yes they do, operationally! :P 1.40ish. Great video. How can you tell though it`s not just an experimental firing. Furthermore the actual lock on the target was not shown (on HUD, FLIR) while it was with the hellfire, tigrat, etc? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Vekkinho Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 If it can carry them it can use them, I'm sure there's a better way to transport missiles from point A to point B than hanging them on a pylon of attack helo. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I`ve seen ka-50 carrying igla and R-73 but can it use them? I don`t think so. That`s probably why ED didn`t make them usable in DCS: BS. Edited August 23, 2009 by topol-m [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
AlphaOneSix Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 If it can carry them it can use them I don't think that this has to be the case. Many weapons use the same mounting system, so can easily be mounted on an aircraft that has the right mount system, even if that aircraft has no capability to fire that type of weapon.
Mugatu Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 It's operational, no question there. Great video. How can you tell though it`s not just an experimental firing. Furthermore the actual lock on the target was not shown (on HUD, FLIR) while it was with the hellfire, tigrat, etc?
4c Hajduk Veljko Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I am pretty sure Gazela is equipped for operational use of Igla or Strela portable AA missile. 4c Hajduk Veljko Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I am not an expert, but these AA (Igla, Strela) missile do not need any special targeting system. All that pilot need is a headphones connected to the missile, point the missile to the target, listen to the sound and shoot. Infantry soldier does not have any special targeting system for using these missiles either. One think is the ability to carry them another is the possibility to use them. This requires the targeting system to be adapted for use of AAMs. It`s probably not so difficult to accomplish the question is how many of the helis we see carrying AAMs have already recieved such modifications. topol-m Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) If you want it properly done then you should at least have some targeting mark on your hud when in AA mode (similar to the one in A-10). It`s an easy thing to do. But since it`s not a very typical weapon for a helicopter and as i`m not into comunicating with manifacturers of combat helis i don`t have first hand info so i can`t be sure which ones use AAMs as regular weapon and which ones don`t. Combat helis are offered in different configurations with different capabilities and weapons so seeing it with AAMs mounted is more like presenting one possible modification which if the customer wants can be implemented in the helis ordered. That`s the question the answer of which can probably be provided by real Tiger, Rooivalk, Mi-28N etc. pilots - do these helicopters have AAMs operational by default (the whole fleet) or there are some modified machines that use them, or none are using them but have the possibility to be modified for using them? The manifacturer stating in his official page that his aircraft can use AAMs doesn`t necessarily mean every single machine produced has such capabilities, it`s more like: "The other competitive helis are advertised as capable of using AAMs so will be mine. And it really is capable, i can put R-27s on it if you want but you have to pay the price." :P The japanese also seem to be testing or even fully arming OH-1 with AAMs. But again several pictures are not as valuable for instance as an export of several dozens of helis along with AAMs and ATGMs - you don`t buy AAMs if your birds can`t use them ;) Edited August 25, 2009 by topol-m [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

But do all HADs have them? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

topol-m Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 ^^^ Nice pics. There are 4 missiles on that pylon if i can see right but what are those round things between the missiles that continue in something like a missile tubes but shorter and with smaller diameter. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
zakobi Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 seeker head? Wouldn't take them for missiles as i would think they are too close then... how close can such missiles be packed together?
