G3 Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) edit: mod, feel free to rename this thread or move this to a more appropriate area, the b grade comedy attempt for a thread title should not distract from the content. history: been around here for a while and i am impressed with some people who are always there to offer assistance, be it a technical question or from a fresh pilot just wanting to know something simple. i still remember being new to lockon and help was always on tap. the following is: just an observation i made when trying to praise a fellow forum member. my desire: to give a fellow member a rep point. my reasoning: a clear concise, to the point response to a question raised by a new comer. an answer that others will benefit from, rather than cringe at like some posts. the problem: a message to spread some rep before the deserving member gets another from me. so what if i gave them one before, they probably deserved it. an undesirable outcome: the need to now give rep to random members for no real reason, rather than just allow me to simply rep the deserving member again. so after spreading a few bananas, i return to the deserving member only then to be told to wait 24hours, you are spreading too much rep ? a monkeys thoughts: why do we have a rep or reward system that gives out bananas for picking your butt and eating it, when it should be for those who actually deserve the rep points and understand you don't eat poo. my thoughts: i feel the current rep system needs a re-think. interested to hear what others think. Is the current rep system valid, you tell me? Edited September 9, 2009 by G3
Triangle99 Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 LOL ... not exactly succinct but I agree with the argument. I have often been prevented from giving rep where it is due because of the strange 'spread it around' requirement. Would like to see this changed, too. L4key Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Have you heard some of the people who post on here? :smilewink: Leaving rep un-restricted would lead to everyone giving/getting rep all the time and it would lose its integrity. You may use the rep system well but others may not if it was completely unrestricted. To create a set of rules around it to completely guarantee reps integrity would be very difficult or would have to be manually monitored, what this site does is create just a few rules to try and ensure rep isn't spammed or just tossed around. Those rules do sometimes cause frustration but IMHO it's a better system in balance than a free for all.
G3 Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) LOL ... not exactly succinct but I agree with the argument. sounds like me, i get there eventually, :) good to hear others feel the same. Have you heard some of the people who post on here? :smilewink: Leaving rep un-restricted would lead to everyone giving/getting rep all the time and it would lose its integrity. very valid point, unrestricted would be far worse than what is currently implemented i must resign to the fact that there probably is no ideal system, the one we have now does stop people spamming reps, but it also hinders genuine ones, i don't have the answer.
