sometimes the laser range finder burns out and i can't fire off the vikers. the strangest thing is that i can still use the guns with the laser targeting. what can you do to fix this problem?

I think there are two different lasers used.

One for range finding (used for targeting guns) and one to guide the missiles.

If the missile laser burnes out it should be repaired when you fly back to base, shut down and wait for 3 minutes.

if the needed vehicles are near the landing site, repairs will be made when you shut off the helo for 3 minutes (I believe).

Get in the habit of looking at the clock whenever you go to Laser Standby.. it will help you to keep from frying the laser if you add it to your mental checklist.

My experience is that a burned laser (no other damages) won't be repaired at airfields/FARPs.

If you want to repair your laser, damage your gear by a hard landing.

The damaged gear will force the service to get you a new ka-50 (repaired) and therefor a new laser (repaired).

I've had this problem a few times in version 1.0. Usually happens after going back to base to rearm once or twice. Seems to be a bit random though. I try to look after the laser and switch it off whenever I can, but in a busy zone it is on for a while at a time.

JG14_Smil - how long can you use laser before it is in danger of burning out? I cannot find any time limit info written anywhere. Also, how long should you leave it off before using it again? What is the recomended cool off period? It would certainly help to know.

In the BS pilot's manual, page 304, section 8-8, HUD cue descriptions, it describes one symbol which is supposed to be [PAUSE cue - cooling cycle of the laser range-finder in the Target Marker targeting mode]

I thought this means that the laser has its own built-in protection and will automatically cool off when it needs to? Being a combat helicopter, its not a very robust system if you need to time the laser every time you use it and risk frying it if you leave it on too long. Surely they have built-in protection?

The laser rangefinder has limitations: 5 series with intervals of 30 minutes;

16 cycles of 10 seconds with intervals of 5 seconds in each serie.

Don't ask me what this means...

lol, I was just reading that exact same page in the manual :D

Page 454, section 13-4, Service Limits and Systems.

Bit of a bummer to have to wait 30 minutes for another cycle if you still have Vikhrs onboard and targets in front of you. Go looking for soft targets to rocket blast in the meantime I guess. ;)

Another thing to confuse the student pilot... page 411, section 11-23,

Under "End of attack and egress" it states:-

[After the reset button is pressed, the shkval will be caged, target tracking and laser-beam channel is turned off, the selected weapon type is reset, and system switches to NAV mode.]

However, the flip switch for the laser remains in the Standby/ON position. What happens if you don't flip it to OFF? I usually turn it off myself anyway, to be sure.

I wish there was an indicator light on the overhead panel to say when laser was on or off and also some kind of warning when laser was reaching service limits would be nice.

Seeing as its the core of your weapons guidance system, its a bit weird that you have to keep timing it yourself to avoid frying it. You'd think it would be simple enough to implement a safety timer that will tell you when its getting hot and needs cooling off?

But, its not an ideal world I know. Its just another thing we'll have to learn to cope with. Train and study - knowledge is power :D

About the damage repair facility...

Is it always 3 minutes shutdown to repair any damage, or does the time depend on how much damage you have? Do they tell you when repairs are complete, or do you have to guess?

There is nothing in the F10 maintenance communications section about repair damage. Maybe there should be?

- 3 minutes for all kinds of damage

- you only have to shut down (fuel cut-off, batteries) and wait 3 minutes

- you do not get any notification at all but you notice the finished repairs when you look at your cockpit-switches - they are all in standard-off-position when repairs are finished (and of course the damages are not longer present)

Thanks for the info Chip. Much obliged.

I searched all the manuals that install with BS and could only find a very small reference to repairs in the GUI manual under "Notes regarding airbase and FARP ground vehicle support equipment."

Would have been helpful if this info was in the main manual and listed in the contents somewhere. I had to stumble across this to know repairs were even possible. Needle in a haystack... phew.
