Hinds are killing me, Vikhrs aren't doing much to prevent it

I'm having a really tough time playing through campaign mission, because I constantly get shot down by the Hind's main gun. If I try to shoot one down from a distance with a Vikhr, I constantly miss, even though I enable the A-A mode.

Any suggestions? Tactics? It's taking out a lot of fun and replaces it with frustration.

Post a Track of your Hind engagement with the Vikhr. We'll then be able to have a look and assist you with advice on how to successfully engage :)

I understand that the A-A or A-A head-on settings control the fuse timing on the warhead (i.e. will make it blow up when it is near them even if it does not hit them). I don't think it can do much about aiming/tracking. Remember, it is trying to follow a laser line pointed AT the target, and if the target is traversing your range, there's no way the missle can make the necessary adjustments in the last moments of it's flight.

I have found, from experience, that the best chance is to hang out, dance around their shots (flares & side-slip) and wait for them to start a turn direct at or away from you. As soon as they look like they will start turning that way, let a Vikhr loose and make sure you keep the target las'd.

Also, if they get close enuf for cannon, cannon shots track VERY well on moving air targets.

And finally, the most fun i've had with A-A is using rockets. He's gotta be close enuf I can see myself in the reflection of the pilot's visor, but that makes it more fun. Long setting, clear the tubes on the bad guy, fingers crossed and use flares like you're over-stocked and they're on sale!

Hi beers,

I don't understand why flares are necessary. Hind gunners track targets manually, through their Mark One* dual sensor dome :). Flares make you more visible to them.

A Squad-mate commented on this the other day......In all probability stems from an Inherent Survival Instinct that makes one want to Involuntary Spam a Bucketload of Flares at the most inoppurtune moments, such as being engaged by AAA, Radar SAM's, TOW's, MBT engagements and the like :D

.........And my personal fav, a Vikhr Launch going back to LockOn days: The moment that Hog Pilot spots the Vikhr launch he haemmorhages Flares and Chaff until Impact in the vain hope that it will help.

:D

Btw sometimes my thumb got fibrosis on the button to shovel off my whole amount of flares in a second as I glimpse some Fliegerabwehr guys, no matter what kinda stuff they have, S-400 or PPSh-41... Having all S2 info is essential :)...

Ohh, by the way: you're really shot down by a Hind? I am jelaous... How can I set any kinda single player mission to dogfight with another helo: Hind or other Shark..? I have not succeeded it yet... Flying head to head... nothing. I shot down impotent enemy helos with Vikhrs, I think I'll try it with a FAB-250 tonight... No resistance by the AI rotorcraft*.

How d'ya do that??!:D

* OFF: unlike F-15s... I succeeded to shot them down by Vikhrs, but only head to head, and mostly they gave me their six-barrel thingy to s*ck:)...

When a Hind is lining you up, you'll usually get a laser warning as he'll paint you to get your range so watch your laser warning receiver. If you have a laser warning in your upper hemisphere or even level, good chance it's a helo painting you. Your best chance to spot them is to stay very low and watch the horizon, as they're easier to spot against the sky than the ground. The first few times I got downed by Hinds I saw the laser warning going off, but I was scanning the ground think "Gee, it looks clear...", before getting smashed by the Hind because I didn't check the sky.... Listen to your wingman calls too, if they call out a bandit send them to attack it.

If you are in guns range for a Hind then he's probably got the jump on you and you are in a bad position and your best bet is to go guns (HE shells) against him, Vikhrs aren't good at close range. I find lots of side slip helps, use the helmet mounted sight with the Skhval at low mag. to pick him up.

If you can spot him early, best to go at him with Vikhrs. I find the easiest way to take on helo's with Vikhrs is to auto turn-to-target and set your missles for A-to-A, with head-on fusing if appropriate, then send a few down range. Auto-hover is handy too if you are in a position that's safe.

The best advice I got for engaging helo's was on the 159th server, the guys there were very helpful. It might be an idea to set up a mission in the editor where you practice engaging enemy helo's for practice. Something nice and big like Chinooks are a good start.

If I were you I wouldn't be using the Vikhr, it doesn't track well maneuvering targets. Use the cannon instead, you'll outrange Mi-24's machine gun or cannon any time.

Lock them up a coupla secs prior to Impact, if at all.......That way they're not evading heavily when you cut their Flight short :gun_rifle:

As far as I know, standard Hind Echos don't have laser device onboard (although who knows original, non-exported Russian stuff:)). But if they have in the game... Well, OK.
