Yeah, they sometimes give you a dodgy steer.

 

What I usually do, is fly to the very last waypoint. Say the last waypoint you have is waypoint 4, you fly there, and then a waypoint 5 will appear.

 

This last waypoint will have you lined up with the runway, ten or so miles out. So once you hit it, your Intrument Landing System will light up and you can just follow it in.

They never give you a bad callout for homeplate. They are sending you to the Final Approach Fix to line up with final, and not the actual start of the runway. Also, worth mentioning is that if you make a call to AWACS to vector to homeplate, your homeplate will change to the closest airbase, even if it's enemy. If you want to make sure that your HP stays the same, don't ask for a vector, only call to tower if you'd like. Make sure to watch the in-game training on the use of the HSI.

Might be a little more here than you need to learn now, but If u master the navigation in the 'hudless' su25, then you can find you way home from anywhere.
