manne Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I'm thinking, after getting DCS: Black Shark last summer, to get me a copy of LockOn + Flaming Cliffs. But there are some things from my Black Shark (BS) perspective that are not really clear to me at this point. I hope I can get some answers: - There are multiple aircrafts, are they all as detailed as the BS, especially in learning all the startup procedures for every different aircraft? Or can you basicly fly every aircraft once you mastered the basics of a single one? - If I'm correct it's on the same engine. Is it also the same world location as BS? Or a different part of the world? - Maybe the most difficult question, is it still "worth it" to get into the game this late after the party? There's probably no definite answer, but I mean, is it still alive? Thanks :)
159th_Viper Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 - There are multiple aircrafts, are they all as detailed as the BS, especially in learning all the startup procedures for every different aircraft? Or can you basicly fly every aircraft once you mastered the basics of a single one? You have the Fast-Jets, ie Mig29A/S, SU-27, SU-33 and the F-15 and the Bombers -A-10, SU-25 and SU-25T. All have SFM (Simple Flight Model) barring the SU-25T which has the AFM (Advanced Flight Model). No Start-Up procedures per se as there are No Clickable Cockpits. Once you have mastered the basics of the Russian Fast-Jets you will be comfortable in swopping. However each jet has it's own peculiarities re FM etc etc so it will take time to Master them all. F-15 on the other hand is another matter in it's entirety with attendant unique systems and Weapons Deployment etc etc. Same with the A-10 and SU-25T. Knowing one does not necessarily enable you to fly the other. - If I'm correct it's on the same engine. Is it also the same world location as BS? Or a different part of the world? DCS based on the LockOn Engine - Not the same. Whereas BS encompasses the Caucasus and Georgia, LockOn Map is the Caucasus and the Crimea Maybe the most difficult question, is it still "worth it" to get into the game this late after the party? There's probably no definite answer, but I mean, is it still alive? O Hell Yeah, even if only for the T-Toad! DCS and LockOn cannot stand to be compared atm due to the obvious Fixed Wing vs Rotary scenario. And having due regard to the inevitable wait of easily another 3 or so years or even longer before we will realistically (and that's a BIG If atm) see a Fast-Jet vs Fast-Jet scenario in DCS, LockOn is where it's at for Fixed Wing atm and will stay like that for, well, who knows how long. Even more so now that ED has announced a further evolvement in the LockOn Product Line which bodes well for the future of LockOn Indeed. Is it Still Alive? manne Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 Thanks for your answers Viper. One question: what is exactly meant by Simple Flight Model and Advanced Flight Model? Are we talking about the complexity of the virtual aircraft with all its tubes, engines etc. modelled accurately or has it something do with how in depth the control of the aircraft is? Or something completely different?
CHola Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Thanks for your answers Viper. One question: what is exactly meant by Simple Flight Model and Advanced Flight Model? Are we talking about the complexity of the virtual aircraft with all its tubes, engines etc. modelled accurately or has it something do with how in depth the control of the aircraft is? Or something completely different? Simple flight model actually means, that all planes fly as if they had FBW, except Su-25T. Cheers, CHola
czarnyolek Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Another advantage LO have its possibility to apply unofficial modifications made by community. These include different textures for aircrafts as well as terrain and ground objects and completely new 3d models that can replace stock planes. However, some people don't like these modifications ;)
Boberro Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 From my point of view: - There are multiple aircrafts, are they all as detailed as the BS, especially in learning all the startup procedures for every different aircraft? Or can you basicly fly every aircraft once you mastered the basics of a single one? No they are not detailed. I would say they're arcadish. - If I'm correct it's on the same engine. Is it also the same world location as BS? Or a different part of the world? Engine is a bit improved, and different location. - Maybe the most difficult question, is it still "worth it" to get into the game this late after the party? There's probably no definite answer, but I mean, is it still alive? yes, of course. With all LO weakness it is fun game, which lets you enjoy flying. If for you all lacks of game are not not stopping you you can be really excited and love this game. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... Aeroscout Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Check out my youtube page, I have a few vids there that might give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/jedilink25 Aero DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices
CHola Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 @Aero, Nice vid, a few points though. Split-S is performed when braking off from at least neutral/advantageous position, while in turn in close combat, so what you did is a Returneman maneuver. If you're gonna dodge the enemy's missile at such high speed as in the in vid, you'd be better off doing Immelmann, than Returneman, because you'd trade speed for height. This way you lost both, speed in high g maneuver and height and dashing on burners at 500ft is never a good idea due enemy IR SAMs. So, if you went up instead of down, you'd loose enemy's missiles more quickly and draw enemy's attention more effectively, leaving your low wingman with a good chance to fire, unobserved. Now, I don't say I'd do it better. Just a few things to think about. :) Cheers, CHola
thaFunkster Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Hmm, going down always seems like a better idea than going up when missiles are after you... 8/10 times if I can get to a hill in time I can hide behind it... Incase you are interested here are a couple of missile evasion training videos from Flaming Cliffs..... http://www.youtube.com/user/ThaFunkster100 Funk on YouTube!
