Duke49th Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Are there plans from anyone to make some low-polygon or low-res models? I ask because one of the biggest performance killer in DCS are the ultra high detailed models. And the biggest problem with that fps hits are on Airports when a couple of aircrafts are on the ground(Ramp/Taxi/Starting/Landing). Every f** screw is where it is in RL. But there is really no need for such details when you fly, because you can't see them. They're only needed for Screenshots or Hi-res Videos. orson Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I would guess that DCS-BS uses a steped detail system like most other 3d games and sims ... starts at high poly and works down to a low poly version , these should be visible at different distances so far away objects are low poly and close up its high poly . Also i think i remember seeing an object detail level setting in the graphics options , my comp isnt super fast ... its a quad Q9300 running at just shy of 2.5 with a GTS 8800/512 , the only slow down i have seen so far is on a first load as i pan around the scene .. after that its silky smooth all day
Boberro Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Yes, from futher distance you can spot boxes and rectangles. From closer they change into normal vehicle model. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
Duke49th Posted October 24, 2009 Author Posted October 24, 2009 Yes, from futher distance you can spot boxes and rectangles. From closer they change into normal vehicle model. But even with LOD values set to low settings in Graphics.cfg it hits my fps when aircrafts are nearby (and in sight of) my helo. (forgot that I tested this already:)) Maybe there is a general issue with the current engine and the models? Maybe it is the engines fault. Maybe it is irrelevant what LOD is "active", because of the engine? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 49th Black Diamonds - DCS & Falcon BMS Online Squad
EvilBivol-1 Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 The problem is that when you are on an airbase, the other objects are close by and so are either in full or second LOD levels. I don't think there is any way to avoid this. Making less detailed models is not going to happen. Graphics in games will always push the limits of PCs available at the time of release. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules

In this day and age I have what I would consider a 'Mid-Level' PC and I have never struggled with low FPS at Airbases or escorting Convoys of High-Fidelity Models at literally a few metres AGL. I also tried with overclocking my hardware. Edited October 25, 2009 by Duke49th [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 49th Black Diamonds - DCS & Falcon BMS Online Squad
