GunnDawg,

like all sims it is playable, if you fly all those sims you will have no issues flying the shark.

Dumb question: What is padlocking, and should I use it? I play with a TrackIR 5.

Padlocking will lock the view to a target, and mean you cannot move your view untill you stop padlocking.

You can still toggle the use of padlock if you like, though it really is intended to assist the player in keeping track of a target which should be made easier by using trackir!

basically, you probably don't need to or want to use it since you have trackir

Thanks for the response! I agree: I'll pass on it.

I play without any head tracking just fine. Best advice is to make a good profile with your X52. Don't be afraid to use shift states. I have one for navigating that allows me to push a button for landing gear and use the triggers for brakes, then flip states and I now have a lase/lock target button and a trigger. Really though if you set your sticks right then you'll never need to use anything but the sticks and buttons you click with the mouse (no keyboard). Really unless you're strafing you'll have plenty of time to flip what ever switches you need to. If you're getting shot at while you're targetting then you're doing it wrong and if you're strafing the only button you need to push is the trigger.

I've always had issues with padlocking myself. I find I tend to get disoriented pretty quickly such that you may think you're flying straight and level when in fact your flying 90 degrees straight into the ground.

I think I've made it quite clear already that I will not be putting money towards a trackIR or have the time to learn to build one. So we can stop with trying to push a TrackIR onto me and telling me how great it is, I already know of its greatness and have played with one before.

Let me say it again, I know how great it is and awesome it is and all that stuff. I just simply cannot buy one at the moment so please stop with the advertisements ;)

I am more interested in gameplay without one, I've heard enough about how good it is with one.

What am I missing with trackIR? I get the fact that if you look to the left you look to the left in the cockpit and so on but if you look left aren't you looking away from the monitor? I can't see this not being uncomfortable, can someone talk me into getting one please? (I love gadgets )

What you are missing is the fact that the TrackIR exhaggerates your head movements. I barely have to swivel my eyes to keep them on the screen when my TrackIR is looking straight backwards. Hell, if the game allows it and you've made the required settings in the TrackIR software you can spin your ingame head several laps before you lose comfortable sight of the screen. :P

For example, say the TrackIR software sees that you've turned your head 5 degrees to the right - it'll then see on your response curves that you want to look out 90 degrees right, so it executes that. Though obviously with right settings it'll be much more fluid than that. (The TrackIR camera operates at 100fps.)

This video should illustrate it:

It is expensive though, and if you are good at tinkering you might want to try FreeTrack instead - it's free, but requires that you own a webcam and can build an IR rig. (Which apparently is pretty easy.)

Short answer, playable without? Yes.

My added question would be: Would you want too?

IMO Heck no, reason: There’s already too many things I need to think about besides adding hat switches views and zooms added to the mix in the heat of the action. Some switches will not be in line of sight quickly enough as It would by raising my head with a trackIr device. Basically TrackIr or Freetrack is a must for immersion & quickness of response time. On the plus side, releasing these views on your hotas allows re assigning these keys to newer assignments.

Anyhow, with or without... When time & budget permits. Add that device in the mix. That was my experience with Lockon before and after trackIr. Remains more true with DCS...

My 2 cents,

Cheers

Try to park your car or brake without them, you will not need going to the gym anymore :D

No, I did not. It is just that the servos example was the first I thought, but I recognize it is not the best ;)
