therion_prime Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Haha - the city/airport in the video and on most screenshots is my hometown Innsbruck in Austria :D My DCS movies:
liotczik Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Remember to update to the latest version, after installing. There are many significant differencies between 9.0 and current 9.41, and many of them are related for helos. Torque induced yaw is also present on propeller aircraft in X-Plane. For example, when you push the nose down, you'll get some yaw. The bigger and more powered the prop, the bigger the effect, but it can be observed even on C172. X-Plane started as a professional training software and it is still used in that role. You could even get FAA approval on it, provided you have detailed hardware cockpit and are willing to spend some serious cash on the professional license, instead of a home one. Also some serious companies and organisations were using it in a past, as an additional engineering tool or a visualisation for their concepts of future aircraft. Innsbruck is one of the most detailed airports in X-Plane, in not THE most detailed. You can see it on the attached screenshot. Sadly, most of the airports are just runway with taxiways and parking area, or only runway (which is enough for me most of the time). There are many sceneries to download, but I can't tell you anything more specific about them, because I don't use them (Innsbruck was already attached to the v9.0, because it's a default airport). element1108 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 ^^^ That was the one thing that bothered me about xplane was the lack of airport buildings etc. It's definitely not a deal breaker for me, but I was impressed to see my local airports faithfully rendered (buildings) to some degree in FSX. I'd definitely still be flying xplane if I had the PC version. The mac version is great, but I can't fly without tracker IR any longer. :)
liotczik Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 http://www.xpluginsdk.org/pilot_view.htm Have you tried PilotView plugin by Sandy Barbour? I use it on my Windows version, because I prefer the way how it handles Track IR, compared to native X-Plane headtracking support. You'll have to configure it separately for each aircraft, but in the end it can give you looking and moving around cockpit almost exactly like in Black Shark. Isn't she a beauty ? :D I believe Innsbruck became quite "famous" among flight simmers because of the training mission in FSX where you had to do an approach in bad weather. My DCS movies:
sobek Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I believe Innsbruck became quite "famous" among flight simmers because of the training mission in FSX where you had to do an approach in bad weather. And not to forget it was the one of the very few default sceneries with thermals, at least pre-FSX. :) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
liotczik Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 http://ivao.xenoflex.de/Download/Charts/LOWI.pdf A complete set of charts for anyone interested in said LOWI approach :) Departures, while less difficult, are too interesting. If you want reeeally good thermals, then I strongly recommend yet another sim ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Originally Posted by Death-17 Any yahoo can fly fixed, it takes skill to fly rotor.

liotczik Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Good to hear that :) How does it fly? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Originally Posted by Death-17 Any yahoo can fly fixed, it takes skill to fly rotor.
Shaman Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 It flies just how we who are coming from DCS world would expect it to! The learning curve is steep. I have had sleepless night just practicing hover and trust me it will take many hours to master. I wouldn't even approach this sim without rudder pedals honestly. I am using Saitek's pedals and they work fine. Today I will be trying out different AP settings. 6DOF cockpit is breathtaking! Gauges all full 3D! You see the mechanism working at if you put your viewpoint just next to them and look at different angels. TIR SHOWCASE :) I will try to post some screen-shots later. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer

Shaman Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) Since my previous post I have been flying around the LOWI practicing AP and flying with ATT mode on. It is exactly like flying Ka-50 with PITCH/BANK channels on, FD OFF. You are still in command of the pedals and are expected to hold direction in hover, or to keep ball centered during cruise. Press/release trim sends current attitude to AP memory. It is possible to trim the a/c to very stable hover, take hands off the cyclic and just keep pressure on the pedal - you may do your work in the cockpit safely. SAS will react and counter any moments related to effects of turbulent air, winds, gusts etc. You actually can observe and feel how it is working. I am completely immersed by this heli avionics :) I have done my very first ILS glideslope capture using AP! AP in ATT mode will adjust pitch to maintain descent - you control forward speed with cyclic then. You can then turn your heli like 45 degree offset so you maintain better visibility with the runway. AP will follow the glide-slope accurately. However there is a way to control this by setting IAS and rate of descent. I haven't done it yet. I know some of you guys would like to ask - if I can choose only one, should I get DODOSIM Bell 206 or ND Art and Tech's BK-117. I would go for BK-117 (sorry DODO!). If you want to read about AP manual is available here: http://www.nd-art-and-technology.com/BK117%20Flight%20Manual.pdf During weekend I was flying with all its "built-in" helpers off (even if it is not correct procedure). Then I was flying with AP channels on but in SAS mode only - which pretty much I compare to flying BS with AP CHANNEL PITCH/BANK ON and FD ON Edited January 18, 2010 by Shaman 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer

Boulund Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Looks amazing ... liotczik Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Amazing! Now I won't be able to sleep until I get it next week :D I have one more question though, have they modelled damage to the helicopter caused by excessive torque or engine rpm/temp? Surely FADEC prevents that, but I'm just curious, what'll happen when it fails for some reason. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Originally Posted by Death-17 Any yahoo can fly fixed, it takes skill to fly rotor.
Shaman Posted January 19, 2010 Author Posted January 19, 2010 BK117 is not equipped with FADEC. I don't know about your other question. I do know it doesn't come with plug-in that simulates how heli ages over time and bad use. However you can practice failures, yes. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
empeck Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I'll bring the thread back from the dead. Have you guys seen this: http://www.hovercontrol.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=1;t=17635;st=0 I'ts an external application that controls helicopter flight dynamics in FS9/FSX. I'm flying with it for few days, and it's much better than default helicopter flight model.
