It's shield. It helps you when ground (air) is similar to HUD color, when u can't read HUD well. It makes HUD visibility better. You open it and turn off by "button" on the left of HUD.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

The lever / button is this thing, you'll see when it changes position in-game when clicking on it more clearly:

Thanks, I did not even know of its existence, it deployed when I was calling the HMS and I suppose I was pressing a HOTAS key that involved the RShift key, so H-RShift and voilá, HUD filter on :D

Its not that obvious on the screen above but when you are shooting a tank sitting on the green field of Georgia it is nice to have it on sometimes!
