I just wanted to know if anyone else's game was occasionally locking up. It happened twice last weekend and once last night. Mostly when in multiplayer games, but one was solo.

I know this begs "what kind of set up do you have" and all that. I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just curious if anyone else gets an occasional crash. Thanks

Yes, I have had the "occassional" crash - a total of 8 since release of the retail version. All traced to driver, OS and/or hardware faults.

I don't quite understand why you don't want to get help identifying and solving the issue, though...

It's crashed maybe 4x in four months. Just enough that I was curious if it I was the only one. I've got a brand new system (only four months old and this is the ONLY installed application, other than Adobe Acrobat). I'd be pi$$ed if I already have to dork with drivers or have hardware issues.

Note that applications aren't the only things that can cause issues - driver updates can do that as well if the automatic cleanup of the old driver fails. And with Vista and W7 many drivers will get automatically updated without you being notified, depending on your settings.

I might do a system roll back since this started happening recently. Where's the setting to prevent automatic windows 7 updates? You're the second person to remind me that auto updates could be a factor. Thanks,

Unsure with Win7, since I don't use it myself, but if it's like vista you would go to Control Panel, System & Maintenance and then change the settings for Windows Update to ask you first. That allows you to check what it wants to install, and deselect anything that you deem you want to install manually instead.

That sounds like you are somehow managing to gradually corrupt your system. I have never been forced to reinstall on this machine - it's been installed and fine since february 2009. But I am also very very restrictive in what I install - I update drivers only when I feel I need to do so, not every single time a new driver comes out. (Why repair things that aren't broken etc?)

Definitely try to look into that. It might be as "simple" as gradual virus infections hitting the dll's that DCS uses and causing more and more trouble, it might be something low-level broken in your OS...

Well Ive had the issue since Ive had DCS, the last year and a half, but currently im running on a clean install of Win 7 x64 on a pc not currently connected to the internet, with DCS as the sole application installed. But Ive had the same problem with various video card updates and Vista as well. Ive tried default bios settings as well altho doesnt seem to make a difference. The other thing is Ive never had any problem with any other game. Only thing I can think of is maybe some kind of memory leak. I usually let my pc go to sleep rather than turning it off. I suppose thats a possibility. Problem is after it happens several times, it corrupts some file to the point DCS crashes everytime a mission is loaded and Im forced to reinstall.

Hm... That is actually quite a bit strange. I also (typically) never turn my computer off - especially during winter since that 630w PSU helps keep the place warm. :P

I guess you could test the memory leak hypothesis through running stats on memory utilization and so on, but even that shouldn't be able to cause file corruption. That seems more like something went wrong during a write call, and my first suspect there would be either bad memory sticks (if it's just a very small amount of bad areas on the sticks it won't manifest very often) or pointers going haywire due to heat or other overclock issues.

I rolled my system back to early Jan, back before the lock ups started.

There's a mission under the "REPLAY" menu, forgot the name but it's "defense of . . . " something. I can get it to lock up at will in this mission by hovering over the airport after wheels up, sending my wingmen to reconnoiter and waiting for them to call in the contacts. So I try it again after the system restore. Well, it locked up again, which tells me it would have done it back in Jan if I had done this mission. I had a brand new system back then.

So I restarted the mission but flew around some this time, still sending wingmen out for reconaissance - no lock up this time.

So Ethereain, my goal is accomplished. This thread is proving I'm not alone, which is all I wanted to know.

No offense, but in their eagerness to help, I've been told to reload the game, don't use onboard soundcards, change your screen saver, hit F2 before going to run, the list is endless. Add memory leaks. Most of it is garbage. Here's the progression:

1st crash - hmmmm that was weird

2nd crash - didn't it do that once before?

3rd crash - OK, I know it's done that before

4th crash - Am I the only one? (hence this thread)

5th-10th - WTF

Personally, I feel lucky the game is running as stable as it is, what with all the modman patches, it being a 32 bit game on a 64 bit system, etc.

BTW, After the rollback, I did change my system settings to not automatically install updates. As I go to turn the computer off it says "please do not turn off your computer, installing updates". *&*#@#*&!!!

That is very interesting. There is a bug that sometimes comes in when cone formations are used, but the fact that moving around avoids the behaviour would seem to eliminate that explanation.

If you find more ways to cause the behaviour, do shout out since it might help in finding the issue. (If nothing else, then for a possible future patch.)

Welcome to the internet. :P

Personally, I feel lucky the game is running as stable as it is, what with all the modman patches, it being a 32 bit game on a 64 bit system, etc.

99% of all games released in the last 2 years were 32-bit processes, and x86 processors have been 64-bit for the better part of 5-6 years. There's nothing to worry about with 32-bit on 64 anymore (drivers can be a different thing ofc) as long as the translation layers work well. :)

BTW, After the rollback, I did change my system settings to not automatically install updates. As I go to turn the computer off it says "please do not turn off your computer, installing updates". *&*#@#*&!!!

That stuff is sooooo annoying. I ended up setting it to query only - there's an intermediate setting that is to download the updates but not install them, and that one sometimes does all kinds of funny things.

Auto-updating Vista 32-bit here. The game has only crashed on me one time only (and for the record I only have experience with DCS:BS v1.0.1c). Iconically, it was right at the end of my first successful mission run and just when I'd hover-taxi'd over to my spot from the runway to land and was just about to descend from my hover to finish up :D

Many games would crash on me when using NVidia's "Forceware" motherboard drivers, so as a rule I blacklist the use of those from now on, but otherwise the rest is relatively well behaved in my experience.

No overclocking (though this doesn't necessarily cause any problems, it pushes your computer threshold closer to its break point and a bit more risk generally for exceeding that).

Only more common issue I face with DCS:BS myself is with the launcher / options app, quite often the UI slows to a crawl or neglects to draw portions of it at all. Flicking to/from Windows desktop and killing FRAPS if I have it running usually cures it, and doesn't cause me any issues once I pick a mission and in-game itself.

I'm no expert DCS:BS troubleshooter but looking in that log, I don't see anything that would stand out to me as being a "ah, that looks bad enough to be a probable cause and worth investigating further". Most of the stuff it says it can't find looks fairly normal for a debug log of an app like this, sometimes those messages just get reported regardless of them contributing to any problem or not.

copy,

I'll fly the "Area Defense" mission under the "REPLAY" menu selection. Guaranteed to lock up. Then I'll get that info. Thanks

BTW, played various other SP missions for ~ 2 hours last night. Ran smooth as silk with no issues. Maybe something in the above mission is screwy?

Yeah, there's been a few similar things happen as well - then with too many cone formations on armor units, but not for all users, so they're a bit hard to track down. Any info you find might be of great help.

Whenever I had Lock-up issues, or anothe rperson had them, it was only certain missions... and also it may have been video or sound drivers or settings...

I had some computer reboots while playing.. I finally got a new motherboard,, and still have had no problems with it..

That's an entry I have for the old vanilla DCS, and it shows that we've got a memory problem associated to the rendering libraries. Basically, just copy-paste what you get when you double-click a dcs.exe entry (there should also be a "copy to clipboard" option).

I didn't want to be one of the hordes who starts a thread on his system locking up, post a couple of follow ups, then just fade away with no resolution.

It hasn't locked up in quite a while now, even on the infamous "Area Defense" mission (actually a .trk file that you can take over and fly - it's listed under REPLAY in the game menu).

What was causing the lock ups? I have a theory - I'm using a Saitek Cyborg 3D USB Gold joystick and it has no software support for Win 7. So I used the default win 7 drivers and it works fine. BUT I COULDN'T LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. I wanted the profiler software for it to work also so customer support convinced me to load in the drivers for another stick. Of course it didn't work for my stick but always showed as running in the task list. I have since removed the incompatible profiler software and I think that did the trick. That's my answer and I'm sticking to it.:)
