That looks like normal IL-2 water texture. First of all, make sure you are running the game on OpenGL. The game has been designed to use OpenGL and is far better looking compared to DirectX.

I have ATI card also and my water is set at 2 (you can set it in the conf.ini in the main IL-2 folder).

There is a program called IL-2 Stab 6.3 (requires registration) that I use. It allows you to modify many settings through a nice user interface so you don't actually need to go through all those configuration files. It can also launch your TrackIR and enables swastika markings and does many many other useful things. The water can actually be set as high as 3 or 4 but, I believe because of my ATI card, it doesn't let me go past 2. I didn't actually see any difference from my friend's screenshots of higher settings.

Finally, if you want a cockpit like in the video and insane amount of other great improvement mods, download a mod pack like Ultra Pack 2 or HSFX (I suggest UP2). They bring a whole new life to IL-2 and I can't imagine flying without them anymore.

A bit sad that water in IL-2 looks much better than in DCS/FC.

AFAIK you don't have to register to use IL2Stab, but it's overkill to use IL2Stab to enable high quality water. That's a simple setting in your conf.ini-file, located in your root folder.

Amongst other, under [Render_OpenGL] there's a variable called:

"Water = x"

where x is a given number. Despite many rumors the number has nothing to do directly with an actual quality ranking (like 0 worst, 4 best available setting):

0 is the simplest rendering

1 is simple hardware-rendered water-surface

Both are the basic quality levels.

2 and 3 are similar to 1, just a few more features added and optimized for AMD/ATI-cards

4 is the same, just optimized for nVidia graphics cards.

In the meanwhile graphics-card have come a long way and you can basically choose which ever looks best with your hardware and quality-settings combination. The difference on modern graphics card is minimal, if at all visible.

You have to run the game in OpenGL-mode to really see the effect of the above setting. There is the same option under [Render_DirectX] in the conf.ini-file, but that only works in low quality.

Also be sure HardwareShaders=1 and ForceShaders1x=0 to allow higher versions of shaders (Ati 2900XT has shaders 4.0)

Sorry for being a bit unclear, I meant that you need to registed to Mission4Today to download it.

It might be overkill for just the water setting but overall it's a great utility that enables swastikas, gives you a nice interface to work with dozens of other graphical and game settings, launches my TrackIR etc. I basically use it the same way as DCSMax.

Thanks for further clarifications!

Ah, I'm sorry, got that wrong, then.

Yes, IL2Stab is a great tool for access to a lot of features.
