*Rage* Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Ok So....overclocking. Previously (stock) e6850 9x333 = 3ghz DDR2 corsair dominator 1066 (but was set at 800 in bios..why?) P5kC Zalman CNPS10X Quiet cooler Coretemp idles 26C Now (as i type) 9x400 = 3.6ghz Ram in bios now reads 961mhz (why? does it scale with FSB automatically?) idles 41C P95 pushes it to 80-84C (seems stable so far, stable in DCS instant action too and cooler at 65C) CPU voltage left at auto...reads 1.36V in CPUZ Now tried an FSB 422. This loads to desktop then crashes in P95. Tried upping the voltage to 1.4 manually and still crashes after few mins in P95 (actually one core just gives up then a blue screen after a few seconds) What Now?? EtherealN Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 On RAM - yes, it scales with FSB unless you have manually unlinked it in the BIOS. I personally wouldn't be all that comfortable with a cooling solution that allows the processor to come up above 80 degrees C, even if it's rare. Even though it may be stable you can expect it to wear out quicker - personally I stop when my P95-stressed temperatures reach 60 degrees. How high you can push the FSB is also dependant on your motherboard, not only your processor (this is why i3-i5-i7 chips overclock so nicely; everything is on-die and integrated as opposed to having things spread out like the C2's). Generally speaking, go to a point where you get unstable, then back off slightly - and always do it in very small steps. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
*Rage* Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 Do you think I have too much voltage through the chip? I thought leaving it in auto always overestimates core voltage requirement? Thx [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22
EtherealN Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 That is possible. It's also possible that you are overstressing motherboard components. On my own rig (see below) I seem to be unable to go higher simply due to the MCP not coping. Konovalov Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Agree with what EtherealN has said. Your CPU temp of +80 is very high. My system as per my sig runs at temps of 35 idle and 60-62 degrees C when running Prime95 stress test at 100% load on both cores and temp sits there around 60 for 12 hours on the trot. Now that is with an overclock of 804mhz above stock and my core voltage as measured by CpuZ is 1.336v. I wouldn't run a system that if under full load reaches +80. Everyones systems are different even if the same spec. So just plenty of trial and error to find your own safe overclock that gives you some extra free performance without turning your system into burnt toast. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the P35 boards so I can't give you any specifics. The best way to go about overclocking in my limited experience is "baby steps". Make one change at a time and make it a small change. Stress test and if it passes make another small single increase then test again. Repeat until it fails. When it fails scale back down one notch and test again. If it passes then do a long stress test (say 12 hours) and if it passes you know that is your safe limit. Good luck sir. :) Intel i7-8700K | Asus Maximus X Formula | Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 3200MHz | Gainward Phoenix GTX1070 GLH | Samsung 960 EVO NVMe 1 x 250GB OS & 1 x 500GB Games | Corsair RM750x 750W | Corsair Carbide Air 540| Win10 | Dell 27" 1440p 60Hz | Custom water loop: CPU EK-Supremacy EVO, GPU EK-GTX JetStream - Acetal+Nickel & Backplate, Radiator EK-Coolstream PE 360, Pump & Res EK-XRES 140 Revo D5, Fans 3 x EK-Vardar 120mm & 2 x Corsair ML140 140mm
*Rage* Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 Thx for the help. Part of me thinks I have just a hot cpu. Before I junked the stock cooler I was shocked to find it idle at 45C and under load it would skyrocket to 85C in no time. Konovalov Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 You could try re-seating your CPU HSF with new thermal paste applied. Perhaps the HSF isn't making ideal contact with the IHS of the CPU. Konovalov Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 One thing I didn't mention earlier. Some motherboards can exhibit strange behaviour or characteristics. With my m/b being the P5B Deluxe many users can get a FSB up to about 360 stable and then past this the problems begin. However if I skip from 360 to above 400 FSB with a lower CPU clock multiplier can be back in business and stable. As I said earlier I don't have any experience with your type of mobo. Might be worth taking a look around some hardware forums and pick the brains of other owners of this mobo. Your CPU might be hot but there may be something on your mobo causing the instability. Yeah that might have been the case with the stock HS. After I installed the Zalman idle temps dropped by 20C! Im happy with the HS seating now. I dont think it could be much better. This was kinda of an introduction to my bios today. When I have more time (over easter perhaps) I may give it another go and see how far I get. I figure my ratio must be 5:6 since my Ram clocks to 960 when i pump my FSB to 400 (Ive left the ratio on auto). Should I change this to make it 1:1 ?? I should have put my reading glasses on as I didn't notice your ram speed compared to your FSB. Yes, definitely change it to 1:1 ratio. That way you focus on the CPU side of overclocking. Then later you can try overclocking or finding your best memory speed and timings.
