There's a gun difficulty selector with IL-2 series so player can choose between realistic and simplified gunnery.

 

My experience with IL-2 made me think that realism is somewhere in between these two. With simplified I'm able to kill 5 or 6 planes with Me-109F-2, with realistic I'm happy when I kill 3 fighters before running out of gun and cannon ammo. But after watching some real WW-II footage I saw that most of the kills recorded are simple 2 sec gun bursts or snap shots.

 

Planes usually turn into fireball after sec or two whereas in IL-2 they're able to withstand more damage.

That is true, I seem to seen several war cam shots and a 2 seconds squirt dead on, usually got a kill in RL.

On another note about the FC 2.0 gun, does anyone notice that the piper, especially in the RUS planes, does not show until close, like 1.5 km. Also, it tends to shake a around a lot. My experience has been mostly online, but maybe people see this in single player as well? Perhaps it is a realism tweak to show that tracking is not always perfect or maybe just lag?

From what I have read this is ED interpretation of the real life movement of the pipper to simulate the lag-time of the computer lead on angel to target track.

RL pipers do have unstable movments due to radar calibration, aiming math method etc. All gun aiming methods have advantages and disavantages. Thats why on several hud tapes you see gun mode swiches form EGGS to LCOS etc depending on distance type of manuevers etc.
