So I've got the Shkval targeting down relatively well, and have decided to try to utilize the HMS.

I can use the HMS to get the Skhval pointing right near my HMS target. However, I then find it necessary to use the standard Shkval slew movements and lockup button to get the TA symbol.

I'm confused about how to get the HMS to go into "processing" mode as described in the manual. I *think* if I do it correctly, the targeting system will automatically lock up my HMS target without further manipulation of the "normal" Shkval locking procedures.

What am I missing here?

Yeah, the HMS deployment can end directly in a "TA" lock. When you press and hold the designate button with the HMS in effect the Shkval will keep pointing to match the HMS until you release designate.

When you release designate it fires a laser rangefinder cycle and attempts a "TA" lock. It's supposed to be a very fast one button way to bring weapons to bear.

Hmm ok but you have to very precise with the Headtracker. MIne is always shaking a bit so in most cases it´s not possible at all. (TrackIR4ProwithTrackClip)

I've never managed to get the HMS to lock on on first try either. I'm using a joystick hat for view control and it's not worth the effort to try to get the HMS cue on target first time. Still it does go straight from caged to ground stabilized which cuts out a step from the process.

The "processing" cue state is hard to see because it's only up for a short period of time as you're holding down designate but the Shkval hasn't caught up to the HMS. The Shkval steers pretty quickly so they aren't misaligned for very long. The flashing is slow (2 Hz, so twice a second) enough that you probably won't even get a whole flash in during the time the flashing is happening.

You know on the apache its a "look and shoot" kind of thing, is it possible to move the HMS about with track IR and shoot without having to "lock" on one particular spot, I rarely use the HMS because I simply dont get on with it well.

Hmm, I find the HMS extremely useful. I can very rapidly point the Skvhal very close to the target I want to hit, and then it only takes a few seconds to manualy slew the shkval onto target, lock it up, and start shooting. I would think that would be the primary purpose of the HMS anyway, maybe it's just an extra bonus if you get a lock on something. I can't say I've ever noticed my skhval locked on anything immediately after using the HMS, I didn't know that was a feature, though I did realize it fired the LRF.

I also bound my HMS to first detent of my trigger in mode 1+ pinkie shift. Then the second trigger detent on my X52 in mode 1 + pinkie shift is fire gun. Thus in mode 1 + pinkie shift, with the first trigger detent held down, I continously slew my gun to the HMS, and I all I have to do is squeeze the trigger a little harder and the guns start to shoot. Pretty fun :) (Mode 1 + NO pinkie shift is just regular guns shooting).
