I agree, but I think its way overdue....

Many times (here in the states) laws are passed for the benefit of corporations and not the consumer / citizen.....

Thanks,

Brett

I agree, but I don't see any changes here in the states, money and politics will prevent it from transpiring here.

This doesn't affect software CP so far - this is purely about people being allowed to copy the content into whatever media format they prefer and/or is convenient for them.

The movie industry has used the DVD encryption not as real protection of the content (their encryption is really REALLY weak ... ) ... but to control the market. That's what region coding's all about, and they can fix prices, and so on, and so on. Theyr'e a huge cartel is what they are.

Don't confuse this with copy protection on a game though ;)

I think (I might be wrong) the ruling is also about that you should be able to make backup copy of your CD, which in the case of SF-protected CD you are not able to.

I don't think the ruling will stand - as it have wide consequences for a big market (France - perhaps EU?) with huge opposition/money from the movie industry against it.

OT: Personally - for software I like more the the per-computer activation approach that having to run things from CDs which I cannot backup. With that many activations as ED currently offers - I think you will be able to run FC longer than lifetime of actively-used single CD. With copy-protected CDs and requirement that you have to have that CD in the drive while playing game - I don't like that I have to change CD everytime I start different game/software. Plus, my CD drive can be VERY noisy ...

It is invariably linked or will soon be... fair use is being redefined over and over again

to the point it's being blurred.

Look at dusty's post on this very same thing.. Fair use doesn't exist in Corporation EULA.

Thanks,

Brett
