sukhoi350 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Hi guys, i keep learning new things in BS everyday and now i'm on navigation. could you please explain a few things to me. 1) is it possible for the autopilot to fly a route using just the ABRIS? or can this only be done with the use of the PVI-800? i mean is there any way of just selecting a WP on the ABRIS and then making the autopilot fly there? reason i ask is that you can set as many WP's as u want on the flightplan but the PVI-800 will only follow 6 of them... so i'm curious as to how this problem can be avoided? or do we just have to live with 6 WP's? Or fly 6 of them on autopilot and the rest using manual control of the chopper? 2) i am wondering about the actual function of the moving map (flightplan) on the ABRIS screen. how do pilots use it in reality? is it just a way of improving situational awareness and giving a "cool" bird's eye view of the area? or can it actually be used to fly the route manually just by looking where the next WP is on the ABRIS. i apologise for the huge amount of questions... any useful info u have will be really appreciated! thanks! 1
Ulrich Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 1) Not possible, no integration of ABRIS and PVI as IRL. 2) All mentioned needs.
Frederf Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 1. ABRIS is just an encyclopedia, no AP control. PVI-800 (or rather PNK-800) only. The method best used is to have long route segments where you type new points in ahead of you along the route. If you change your controls to use the keyboard numpad for the PVI-800 panel and change the ABRIS to read the same format as the PVI you can type in new coordinates pretty darn fast. 2. You can use it as a hands-on navigational system if you like or simply as an aid to situational awareness. Neither option is wrong. The ABRIS has quite a few features designed to help you fly its route, namely the XTE meter.
GGTharos Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Good questions and normal for beginners. Hi guys, i keep learning new things in BS everyday and now i'm on navigation. could you please explain a few things to me. 1) is it possible for the autopilot to fly a route using just the ABRIS? or can this only be done with the use of the PVI-800? i mean is there any way of just selecting a WP on the ABRIS and then making the autopilot fly there? As Ulrich said, no. Only a limited amount of information flows from the PVI-800 to the ABRIS and back. Specifically, datalinked targets and ingress points, as well as position correction for the INS. Waypoints are not shared. reason i ask is that you can set as many WP's as u want on the flightplan but the PVI-800 will only follow 6 of them... so i'm curious as to how this problem can be avoided? or do we just have to live with 6 WP's? Or fly 6 of them on autopilot and the rest using manual control of the chopper? The ABRIS can only store 6 waypoints (+10 target points, +2 Airfields ... it's all in the manual). Once you reach the last PVI waypoint, you have to reprogram the PVI with the set of next six waypoints for it to fly. The procedure for programming the waypoints into the PVI and the route as well is also in the manual. You may want to autohover or land for this. Landing would cost you less fuel (hovering requires a lot of power). 2) i am wondering about the actual function of the moving map (flightplan) on the ABRIS screen. how do pilots use it in reality? is it just a way of improving situational awareness and giving a "cool" bird's eye view of the area? or can it actually be used to fly the route manually just by looking where the next WP is on the ABRIS. i apologise for the huge amount of questions... any useful info u have will be really appreciated! thanks! All of what you mentioned, possibly more. It is meant to enhance navigation capability and situational awareness, and by extent, your combat capability. sukhoi350 Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 also, could some one tell me whats the best way to set the "curves" for the joystick in the sim to get the most realistic control outputs. i am using an X52 if that makes any difference. my control inputs/outputs seem alright so far except maybe just a little bit of lag between my control input and the time the stick actually moves in the cockpit.... but i guess thats just gonna happen with any sim right?

sukhoi350 Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 Awesome thanks!!!! Sweet! and also, sorry i know this is way of topic, but do you know what mod it is for the runway textures that u see at the start of this vid? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFgdL7KnzEI and what other useful mods would u suggest for DCS BS (if it needs any) thanks again!
Frederf Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I would imagine those are Dragon's found here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=37246

sukhoi350 Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 thanks! those look great! do u know if CH pedals are any good in BS?? I was gonna get some on ebay. i am just wondering if it will work alright in conjunction with my X52 stick? thanks again
Sarge55 Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I use CH pedals with a X-52 stick with no problems. They work fine in BS and LockOn FC2 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] i7 10700K OC 5.1GHZ / 500GB SSD & 1TB M:2 & 4TB HDD / MSI Gaming MB / GTX 1080 / 32GB RAM / Win 10 / TrackIR 4 Pro / CH Pedals / TM Warthog
sukhoi350 Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 cool thanks! sorry i know i ask a gazillion questions about BS, but have another small issue... i find that the default cockpit view in the sim is a bit unrealistic as it's a bit of a "fisheye" effect? i usually zoom in a little. is there a key or anything that gives u the correct "human eye" zoom?
Bucic Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I think it would be better if you'd use separate threads for some of such questions. Just remember to read the sticky directory thread, FAQ, manuals and, above all, use the search function before you start a new thread/ topic. As for the "Fish eye" - you'll find the answer in DCS-Black Shark Key Commands.pdf, View section (zoom).
