Hey All,

I've noticed that when I'm flying, that the position indicator is off-center and to the left after I get the aircraft in straight and level flight (...indicator "diamond" is also forward for getting my airspeed up as well...). It seems that the aircraft wants to tilt to the right a bit, which I think is why I'm seem to always be trimmed off center and the the left. :joystick:

I'm using a full CH Joystick set up and everything seems to be calibrated...so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why I'm seeing this behavior.

Thanks,

D

This is normal and is due to slightly asymmetric aerodynamic forces.

EDIT:darn, Dash beat me to it.

I suspect you are talking about the controls indicator. Your joystick is probably working fine. Aerodynamic forces cause the helicopter to fly slightly asymmetrically, thus your control displacement. See the thread "problems stepping on the ball" for a more in-depth discussion.

I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!"

Doing "whatever keeps the ball centered" will cause you to fly in a sideslip, ie., a yaw without any bank.

Thanks for the pointers guys.

I did some more reading and it looks like, yes, this is just the way the aircraft behaves. It probably also couples with my obsessive need for perfect straight and level fight which...it looks like...is not possible with the KA-50, i.e I either get a slight slip or I'm slightly banked. Got to readjust my expectations. Turns out, given this info, I'm not that bad of a pilot after all. I just have to practice my turns which I seem to always overcompensate for in terms of rudder input.

Buic told me to watch the aerodynamic vanes on the nose to detect slip and it's been great. They're kind of hard to see but if you lean in a bunch you can.
