It depends on how many computers are on your network. If there is only one computer/device you won't need to worry about the static IP. However if there is several computer and/or devices, the one that is turned on first received the default address. It is so much easier to set up a static IP than to worry about what order to turn on things.

Alright, thanks. And I must annouce that there will be a delay in me opening a port in my router. I have run in to something terrible! It is a password for my router......that I forgot! So yeah, I need the password to open the port so it will take a little time to remember it. I was so close. I filled out all the info and just when I thought I was done, it askes for a password and I was like, "uh-oh I forgot the password!" :[. But it shouldn't take too long but anyway, thanks for all the help.

(Oh, and yes my router is connected to 2 other computers(computer it's plugged into included) and 3 cable boxes so a total of 6 devices)

There is usually a button on the router to reset it to the default settings. This will remove the password that you cannot remember and reset it to the default password. Then you can reconfigure everything the way you want it.

Oh, you kinda worried me there, Thanks, and soon now I will open some ports. While I am, can somebody answer this? -If I don't have a static IP, will I have to re-open the port every time I shut down and turn on my computer? Thanks.

If you don't have an EXTERNAL static ip (ie the IP address that the internet see's), then its no problem..just check your external IP on that site (or any other one like it...http://www.whatismyip.org or whatever), and have your buddy connect to that IP, no need to change any port forwarding.

If you change INTERNAL ip though, because of a DHCP lease change, then you will just need to change the setting on your p[ort forward / nat setup on the router.

as people have said though, far easier to set a static internal IP, then you'll never have to worry about it again..it's very easy to do, but i'll leave you to google it if you like... just set it to the same IP you have now though for eg..just dont forget to note you current subnet mask and gateway settings
