If I understood correctly the piper is like the gun cross in the f16 which is showing the aircraft nose position. If that's the case. Should the depressive piper be placed down on the horizon line before take off. Otherwise how can you tell at what angle you really climbing or descending? Since FPM is showing the actual flight path and not the aircraft nose position.

Ok. I thought the AOA is the difference between your chord line and the relative airflow. The VVI shows only the rate of decent or climb thus not really showing nose position. Is the piper's default position right, after the engine start or should it be moved down to the horizon line?

Can't you just look at the pitch ladder?

EDIT: The pitch ladder will give you a rough idea. That combined with VVI, and AoA, and speed should give you enough information. If you want, you can shoot a glance down at the ADI, but I don't see that as necessary.

Oh depressed little piper, what are you for?

You hang out so high, and have your own little switch.

I move you down, and up and around,

but still I think you really should do more.
