Squid Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) It appears that disabling "full screen" from the FC2 settings is not allowing AA to apply (maybe AF too?) . Thats with my ATI 5850 win 7 64 , 10.8 Cats. Is it possible to have AA working with disabled "Full Screen" ? (btw what's the difference between enabled and disabled, both seem full screen to me) Edited November 19, 2010 by Squid . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
EtherealN Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 If full screen is disabled and you do not see a difference you probably have your resolution set to the same as your screen's native resolution. The thing with running in windowed mode is that windows retains control of the graphics driver, thus things that get applied to the application may not have sufficient authority so to speak to actually be applied. Squid Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 the other thing though is that smoothnes and framerates are significantly better with full screen off ... could that be just because of absense of FSAA ? i would be surprised of just 2x AA is what can make such a difference in smoothness . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
Squid Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) The more i experiment with full screen on/off the more i discover the difference in smoothness to be colossal ... with vsync on (riva d3d overider) so practically same fps in both cases , full screen "off" feels like running 100 fps more ... Looks crispier, cleaner, sharper and absolutely motion smooth. It just screams for bit of AA (like 2x) and shimmering elimination (urban areas) . Besides the AA and shimmering, feels exactly as the sim SHOULD feel. Solid, Smooth, crisp. feels actually like 3D .. Full screen "on" offers jags elimination and shimmering reducing (although not totally) by Super Sampling AA, but with my settings being AA 2x (no matter mode, keeping SS for shimmering control), AF 8x, Performance mip maps, the image feels mudy compared to Full Screen off, and the overall performance is nothing but smooth, stutters, micro breaks everywhere, feeling like a 15-20 fps flat thing Cant help keep wondering if there's a way to have AA (i am not sure what is going on with AF) in full screen off ..... :( . Mustang Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) One thing you have to bear in mind when running in windowed mode with your Radeon: VPU and mem clocks will be lower (Powerplay settings) so it's not really advisable. Example: on my 5770, when in full screen mode in DCS/FC2.0, my VPU/mem clocks show 875/1300, if i run in windowed mode it shows 400/1300. Edited November 19, 2010 by Mustang
Squid Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) this doesn't make sense as at least the Catalysts Overdrive detects DX and OGL applications and automatically increases clocks then decreases them again when there's no 3D application running. Its a tested fact as i have been OCing all my video cards and i use windowed 3D applications to test if my OC 3D/2D profiles automatic activation work. (either from Overdrive or MSI afterburner, ATi tray tools, Rivatuner, etc ) LockOn is no exception. With Lockon working in windowed mode my HD5850 clocks automatically increase.
