I have just been playing Smerch Hunt on Beta 3 - fantastic by the way - but the one niggle I have is that I can't use the radio.

I have assigned my \ key to the radio (re-assigned might be the better word as the original assignation didn't work at all) and pressing it brings up no menu. I know I have a wingman: I can see him and after I was shot down he did a sterling job of avenging my death ... would have been nice if I could have asked him to do it ahead of time though.

Is anyone else having this problem and if they are, have you found a solution?

Cheers!

i also have problems in this mission, i'm using realistic radio settings and i'm setting frequencies as told by the voice, but i cannot speak with jtac (third smerch)but with tower i can speak for start up and take off, maybe the voice over is telling me the wrong frequency?

Cheers! They've obviously made that more strict in beta 3. I'll give it a go.

Are you sure you have a clear line of sight with the JTAC. What I mean is if the mountains is blocking you from the JTAC, they wont hear you and u cant hear them. Also go into mission editor and check to see what frequency they are on, then go from there. Hope this helps.

Ahh, yeah, seems that's still bugged. The text tells you VHF AM 131.00 however the actual JTAC SEAL unit is on VHF FM 30. Try FM 30 and it should work.

if i recall correctly i tried also vhf fm 30...but as soon as i can i will try again

I got pretty frustrated that things still weren't working so I went and had a search around for more detailed radio instructions. I now know a lot of what I was doing wrong with the radios - I didn't really get the whole AM, FM, and UHF idea. I've now found out how to tune each radio properly and I can at least now speak to my wingman on the correct frequency. I haven't had a chance to try the JTAC since (I ran out of time last night).

I have been trying to contact the ATC on this mission though and still without success. I have checked the F10 map (nothing in briefing or mission planner about this) and that shows Mozdok as having a frequency of 137.00Mhz. I am assuming from my reading that this is therefore an AM channel and I have set my AM radio accordingly. I sit on the ramp with engines running (I can't see the radio until the engines are on and I can push the throttle levers forward a bit), I switch to AM radio on the mic switch, and ask ATC for startup. Nothing.

So ... a) Am I doing something wrong? b) Is the tower frequency for Mozdok wrong? c) Is there any way of find out what the frequency is for Mozdok if not through the F10 map?

From searching I have found other people have said they are talking to ATC, but obviously glitches can be a mission by mission issue.

Any help much appreciated!

You need to make sure that your generators and APU are all on and you've set your radio to TR before you can use the radio. See the radio startup sequence in this video:

If you don't have TrackIR you can use the following key commands to center the AM radio without starting the engines:

  1. RShift+RCtrl+Numpad / till you can see the stick.
  2. RShift+RCtrl+Numpad 4 all the way (Left MFCD should be centered now)
  3. Numpad 2 to tilt down and the AM Radio should be centered now and readable. (Use Numpad * to zoom in a bit to make it easier to read and Numpad 5 then Numpad ENTER to reset when you're done.)

Thanks. I'll check that.when I get home.

Just as a matter of curiosity has anyone been able to speak to ATC on the Search Hunt mission?

I think Mozdok tower doesn't respond since it, well, doesn't exist!

There's no buildings at that airfield, so that's probably why you can't contact it's tower?

Hmm. That makes sense I guess and all indications are that there isn't one.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that the ATC coding is not going to be linked to a physical building in game, though I know little about these things and am entirely prepared to be wrong :)

Yeah, I think it's more likely that all the work for Mozdok hasn't been finished yet (not only buildings, but ATC also) as opposed to the lack of buildings being the cause of the issue.

Play this mission again last night, finally finished it 100% complete and got no score for it. Grr. Mission scoring and credit is really making me angry since it appears to make no sense.

Arrgh! But that's my favourite mission!
