Avatar72 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 So to hook those up, I take it I would need to use one of my video ports on a typical present day video card. A typical video card would come with two DVI ports. That would mean one for the main monitor but then you would need two more for each MFD. So would I be forced to but a TH2G adapter or is there something else avaialble?
Kuky Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 You can get second video card (doesn't have to be fast at all) just to connect the monitors to it, the second card will be just like a buypass... or get one of the newer ATI/AMD video cards that has 2x DVI ports and Displayport... those support 3 monitors... actually I am not sure if latest HD6970 can support 4 monitors as it has 2x Mini DisplayPorts and 2x DVI ports (and 1x HDMI port but HDMI port can't be used for this) No longer active in DCS...
Avatar72 Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Kuky, Funny you should say that. I'm seriously considering a 3 monitor setup (not including MFDs) with two video cards. Meaning four ports avaialble out of a needed 5. Two DVI ports per video card though would make that a big difficult. That would be my actual scenario, I was just simplifying the problem for a single card. :) I have an older 8800GT I can choose not to sell and maybe use that but I wasnt planning on inserting 3 cards into a new rig.
Kuky Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 if you want 3 monitors just for the main view I think you might be better off with Th2g. I remember when I had 2x HD4870 cards in CF I could not get 2 monitors to work each connected to different video card... maybe I just didn't know how to do it back then :noexpression: Maybe better confirm with others that have such setup how it can work No longer active in DCS...
Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Errr, Kuky, can you please state why you cannot use the HDMI port for a multimonitor setup? Because that's what I planning to do. Plan B is to use the 2 Mini-DP for the MFCDs (using DP-VGA adapters). But I read that the screen with the highest resolution has to be on DP. So not sure here either. Plan C is to put both MFCDs on DVI and the main screen on DP. I don't fancy this too much since I have to get an expensive active DP-DVI adapter plus 2 VGA-DVI adapters. Any advice?
Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 BTW, I received following screen yesterday. It works brilliantly so far - big enough to fill the entire Cougar MFD frame. Still struggeling with 3 monitor setup though. http://cgi.ebay.ch/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160415097718&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
BKLronin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I´m planning to get at least on of those. They are cheap and USB cappable. http://www.pearl.de/a-PX3344-1042.shtml?query=8+tft [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
chokko Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 reference 6xxx cards wont support 2 of the vga monitors + 3rd via DP they have a single link and a dual link dvi port. something amd skimped on to improve speed in other areas (just quoting what the sapphire tech support told me after spending many failed hours trying to do same setup as kuky, with same vga monitors, on 6950) the 5870 etc have two of the same (better) dvi ports, and work ok with 2 vgas connected. Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Ha! HDMI on main working great so far. My setup: Gfx card: Asus 6950 flashed to 6970 BIOS (2x DVI, 1x HDMI, 2x miniDP) 1 - main screen - 24" LG TFT - HDMI 2 - right MFD - 8" no name LCD - DVI/VGA 3 - left MFD - 8" Hami Touchscreen - DVI/VGA (not tested since I need another DVI/VGA adapter - will do so tonight)
Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Hmm, chokko is right sadly. After reading his reply I tried following: 1 - main screen - 24" LG TFT - HDMI 2 - right MFD - 8" no name LCD - DVI/VGA (top) -> works 3 - left MFD - 19" no name TFT - DVI (bottom) -> no picture when I switch the DVI around its: 1 - main screen - 24" LG TFT - HDMI 2 - right MFD - 8" no name LCD - DVI/VGA (bottom) -> no picture 3 - left MFD - 19" no name TFT - DVI (top) -> works So it seems only one DVI port is usable. What a mess! My last try will be: 1 - main screen - 24" LG TFT - HDMI 2 - right MFD - 8" no name LCD - DVI/VGA (top) 3 - left MFD - 8" Hami Touchscreen - miniDP/VGA
Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 update: Alrighty. Just came home with an Apple (yikes) MiniDP-VGA Adapter. Hooked up the third monitor - and voila - it works! 1 - main screen - 24" LG TFT - HDMI 2 - right MFD - 8" no name LCD - DVI/VGA (top) 3 - testrun - 19" TFT - miniDP/VGA So off to hook up the real 8" Hami! Will report findings.
Kirin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 final update: It works - it really does. Both MFCDs export nicely. Now I just have to mount the Cougar pack! :)
