Inspired by the tactics I learned from DCS:A-10C I'm back to the Su-25T in FC2; its higher speed giving a welcome boon.

I rediscovered the KAB-500R TV-guided weapon, which is very nicely fire-and-forget. Ideal to strike fixed targets, or deal with troops packed around a roadblock etc.

I noticed however that the KAB-500R fails to hit moving ships; I read somewhere that in fact it is capable of continued tracking of a ship though.

Anyone more info on that?

There may be a speed above which it can no longer track it. This appears to also affect the Kh-29T.

Since when can Kh-29T guide on moving targets? oO :)

I'll try at other release angles /speeds if it cannot compensate for target movement. I dunno if my source - some guys debating on a forum - is reliable, but one of them claimed KAB-500R could be used against ships.

Anyway even as it is now it is fun enough for me!

When I fly Su-24M I drop KAB-500 against static ships. Once I flew high alt 12 000 meters at about 1100-1300 Km\h... I could drop KAB-500 from 44 km against BUK.

Don't remember it hit, I think yes.

It didn't when they were moving at 30km/h, but I seem to recall they did track moving targets before. Maybe this is FC1.12, or maybe this is for other speeds, or maybe I am just imagining :)

They will just don't fire so that the seeker has to perform translational motions. Best way it file them from the trailing end and they will guide themselves.

The KAB-500KR gives you very interesting engagement options, since you can fly away immediately after drop and you can drop from quite a high altitude and speed.

According to a Russian site the KR can pierce hardened targets, the KAB-500-OD version is a fuel-air weapon. That would also be a nice addition to LO-FC2! (It was available in LO-FC1).

I added a little mission to showcase the KAB-500KR. Nothing special: you take off from the runway (Mind: there is a party taking off before you, I find them a little talky). You then fly to your first waypoint waiting for a FAC message to appear; the target will be marked: it is artillery firing at your airfield. If you knock them out, a second target is marked if you want to.

Be carefull on landing, because the Artillery might have blown some holes in the runway!

You can add to the challenge by eg putting some Shorads near the artillery.

Frankly I've never seen Kh-29T guiding on moving target - recently I've flown mission where was moving column. To kill target I had to fire Kh-29T way ahead of unit, if I didn't missile wouldn't hit. Target speed was about 15-20 km\h. Even Kh-29L has troubles guiding on moving target, where theoretically it should be able to cause it goes where laser shows... but in practice it is too small manoeuvrable like Kh-25ML :]

. . . Cy-24M ??!!! :drunk:

Yeah, you can catch me quite often on my server - I host for Su-17M4, Su-24M and rest default Air-Ground flyables ;]

I must have been imagining it then. I did just do a test with KAB-500Kr's against the Kuznetsov and though I get a launch authorization when I am in range with the KAB-500Kr's, when I drop them they do not track the target (unfortunately)

Are you sure? I think when I dropped a bomb against big sam site from about 44 km it hit hmm.

Going to do test, maybe I said wrong.

I forgot to say that the Kuznetsov was moving at 20km/h.

When I put it stationair the bombs hit it without a problem.

I tested and it really doesn't follow to target until lock is below 15 km range. I was wrong. Anyway it can be utilised good, you can kill Tunguska, Strela or Tor if you don't have anything better to use against them :P
