I'm sad that the sim does not model a contemporary theater like Afghanistan but, regardless, I was wondering if anyone knows whether there is a steep mountain pass/canyon for a mission I'd like to design. I'd like to stage a convoy ambush, with both Blue FACs and Red RPG/Stinger teams nestled in the canyon walls. I'm none too optimistic but if anyone knows of terrain like this, please post, thanks!

Just take a flight along the Caucasus range, you will find a number of locales that fit your description.

Thanks, Sobek, always great to hear from an ED staffer, appreciate the assist, as always.

I don't really think i was of much help there, but you're welcome. :)

Oh and make no mistake, the translators are not staff. ;) The real officials have the tag 'ED Team'.

There are some superb training areas for Afghanistan in the Caucasus. As you probably know, in the 1990s Russo/Afghan war, Russia used the Caucasus for training - problems of helo ops at height, extreme temperature etc.

Thanks guys, very helpful. This ME is a powerful tool if you plan the scenario and choose the terrain carefully enough, especially if the goal is realism.

Check out the Kodori Gorge, Tkibuli and Lake Ritsa Districts. Google them to find them in google maps and then fly them in the ME to see if thats the terrain you are looking for.

if you start on Mozdok Airport an fly straight south until you reach vladikavkaz where the mountains start you will find a beautifull entrance to a deep 25nm long canyon.

In the Canyon flows a river and there is a road with some little villages and in the boarder region you see high mountains (up to 10.000 feet) on the canyon sides.

it is worth for a fast and low sightseeing tour :pilotfly: dont know if it is what you searching for, but i think its a great area for some action :)

just did a flight trough that canyon, if you follow the river at some point the river turns to the west and the road heads to the south, if you follow the road you will see a mountain pass at 8000feet alt.

made some screenshots at that position :)

one or two miles ahead of above screenshot, here goes the mountain pass road down to the other side.
