mooshim Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 in tip tools...I see it all the time. Does it mean, as I suspect, in future iterations of the sim there will be more added? --many thanks. ~Moosh [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win7 | Intel Core 2 Quad | Q8400 @ 2.66GHz | 2.67 GHz 3.37GB of RAM 60gig Samsung SSD| GTX 570 "Operation: Bull by the Horns" "Bull Run 2.0"

Dethmagnetic Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 "Future growth" isn't just a sim thing, it's commonly used in real aircraft design - for example, if you are putting together a warning light panel, you will often have several lights reserved for future growth, in case the aircraft is upgraded or has optional equipment added later on. EtherealN Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Also, there is a lot of standardization even on things that might be thought of as "custom", leading to buttons and switches that aren't used (but might be useful in later modifications, so no reason to remove them). Example - A2G mode switch in the F-15C... :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
OutOnTheOP Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Wait... I thought the F-15C fire control system supported strafing and CCIP dumb bomb delivery?

GGTharos Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 The F-15C does, but the USAF does not. Not a pound for air to ground for the 15C ;) (Though I hear they do a bit of training to at least be familiar with the system if need be. Their bread and butter though is A2A, and that is effectively all they do). Wait... I thought the F-15C fire control system supported strafing and CCIP dumb bomb delivery? Steel Jaw Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Not a pound for air to ground for the 15C ;) Correct. Of course, that means that when most of the action is in mud-moving, the Eagle Drivers just bore circles in the sky orbiting at FL250 waiting for a bandit to come by. Boberro Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 (edited) Yes, F-15s are circling around waiting for cameras, photos and big showtime.... where bombers make history. Period. :D Edited December 23, 2010 by Boberro Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... GGTharos Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 350. They're not thrust-deficient like those little flake-ons ;) Correct. OutOnTheOP Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Oh, ok. I know the USAF doesn't generally use -15Cs for A2G (no need to; there's a surplus of other more suitable airframes to handle the current taskings); I just meant it CAN support A2G. Hence, the A2G switch in the cockpit is there for a reason. Might never get flipped, but then again, I can think of other controls that are in a lot of cockpits that should (hopefully) never get used, either. Ejection lever, anyone? :smilewink:
GGTharos Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Not the same thing. The USAF's F-15C pilots simply don't train for A2G. They know enough to use the systems if they must, but unless there is a desperate and I repeat, desperate need for F-15C's to do A2G, that switch will just never get flipped. tusler Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Correct. OutOnTheOP Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Sure it's the same thing. You only use the A2G switch in the F-15C in dire emergencies. Kinda like you only use the ejection lever in... wait for it... dire emergencies. And I suspect F-15C pilots have more physical practice flipping the actual A2G switch than they do pulling the actual ejection lever. I'm all for realism in training, but that'd get expensive fast. :megalol:
