Have been setting up my joystick now I have figured out Modifier's. My one question is I have one button on the joystick set to 'Lock Target' and when I use the modifier it is the 'Uncage Shkval, designate target' button.

Does this mean that the 'Uncage Shkval, designate target' button will lock a target and if you press again unlock the target? I am thinking it should read 'Uncage Shkval or designated target' or am I wrong.

I don't think i understand your question.

Lock target will lock target. To move off target I either hold down lock target and slew shkval or press the shkval reset button.

Uncage shkval will activate the optical sensor and do one of the following.

1. Centre the view of sensor from caged position

2. move sensor to item selected from datalink

3. move sensor to point desgniated from HMS.

So there isn't really an unlock tgt button....so if I lock a target up then decide to change tgt's, it'll be either press and hold 'Lock Tgt' again and release when the new target is in the box or hit the reset button and start again.

At the moment I am pressing the uncage Shkval to move to another tgt when the first is destroyed, but this will sometimes cause problems as the sensor then slews away from the target I want next. I understand why it's doing it now (either recentering Shkval or going to next datalink target)

The more I look into things in this sim the more my grey matter struggles....I need an neuron upgrade! :D

Thanks for the answers peeps  I have just ordered the printed manual form Amazon, had to be done, I need it beside me when I fly!!

[ENTER] unlocks target when held down with slew controls used and the target box is moved slightly off the currently tracked target. The shkval target box drifting away is most probably caused by the logic of "Moving target" mode operation. Please refer to one of the separate topics on the subject.

Yeah, just slew till target box is off your target and it will not be locked.

The traveling target box annoys me. I need to learn to turn off the moving target button when the target is obscurred. That seems to be the times it drifts on me.

There have been quite a number of times the travelling box has helped me. For instance when the target drives behind an object obscuring my view. When they pop out behind it (unless they have changed direction or speed), the box will be very close to them and tracking in the same direction. Makes it very easy to reaquire them.

But if they change direction (like turn on a different road) then yes the "logic" can make things difficult

I believe in the real Shark, there is no unlock. You just hold down lock while you slew to another target. The only way to unlock is to hit the reset button next to the laser on/off switch [backspace]. This resets and cages the shkval.

Of course, in reality, you can lock up the ground, a boulder, etc. Which is why I want FPS in this sim. Watch out, snipers!

Changing magnification breaks the lock too I've found.

Well, I stick by what I say. From all I've pieced together, I think I'm right. The only other thing I can see on the real copter is you might loose lock going from high to low magnification, and not sure what would happen if you slewed to the blank sky or really far away. In real life, there are no "objects" like in game.

Yeah, but thats in game. I was talking about the real shkval, because there are no objects in the real world. From what I researched on it, it appears that the real pilots have to hit reset to cancel lock. Which, if you look at it, makes sense. Since there are no "objects" in the real world, the shkval just keeps lock wherever you slew it, on the grass, at windows, at rocks, etc. Until you hit reset. I would love to use it against snipers leaning out a window. I was reading somewhere that the new optical technology coming out is going to allow target ID up to about 10km. I think it was on the Mig-35 (Super Mig-29).

That will be nice. Its really hard to tell sometimes just exactly what your shooting at, and I question why we do not get a clearer picture on the shkval. I've yet to see any pics of an active screen on the real one though.
