Ran into a problem with my install. So opened the Protect.exe, and 'deactivated'. At the end it incidated '9 activations left' which was about right, since I had porked an install some time back, and did not 'deactivate' before the reinstall.

This time i un-installed. Then re-installed full, same folder etc. Patched to 1.02, then ran the protect.exe again, and chose 'activate'. When it finished, it told me that i have 6 activations left.

Why would a single install take me from 9 to 6 activations ?

When you de-activated, it didn't tell you how many activations were left, it told you the amount of de-activations. You start with 8 activations and 10 de-activations.

First use - 7 activations left.

Second use - 6 activations left.

Grrr, cause StarForce is crap that is why. I lost another couple of Activations the other day after an in flight crash to desktop.

I wish developers would give up punishing us honest users, pirates will break any protection out there if they want to (PS3 come to mind...).

Now the real question is, what happens a few years down the road when I want to play again and ED is no longer around or the auth servers are gone? Bricked game right?

To this day I can still load up Falcon 3 or 4 and play if I want to...

Never heard of that before. In any event, this is not the time nor the place for Starforce discussions ;)

If you conducted a cursory search and read the relevant threads, you would have known/ascertained that in the event of the the above occuring, ie 'ED no longer around', a patch would have been released removing Starforce from the product - Confirmed by representatives of ED.

No reason for the Doom-and-Gloom :)

Thorvald, if you want help figuring out what happened, ask for it without attitude and you just might get some assistance. My bet is that you didn't lose any activations at all. A lot of people come around thinking they lost X amount of activations, but when actually checked - nothing. ;)
