Bucic Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Does anyone know for how long PCI slots will be present on average mobos (not some freaky 'we still have PCI - vintage edition' mobos')? I'm selling my unit and I don't know if I should keep my PCI sound card or not. EtherealN Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Not the foggiest, I'm afraid. I do think it'll be at least a year or two more though since even newer 1155 mobos tend to have some. Bucic Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 You mean after two years or so from now PCI slot availability might get tricky as a factor when choosing a middle class (~$110) mobo? EtherealN Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Yeah, but it's an uncertain "might". I've not really seen an indication that it would be on it's way out, and considering how long the old IDE power connector survived it'll probably be around for a good while. Basically: you should be 100% certain for 2 years or so. After that I'd say something like 80%, but that's a guess. joey45 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 PCI would be around for a few years yet. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Kuky Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I'll give it few more years... as long as they sell PCI cards they will have motherboards with PCI slot in them... but I've noticed some new motherboards don't have PCI slot any more... so it's time is near :) PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
joey45 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 And sound cards are going PCIe now anyway. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Kuky Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 You can keep it or sell it... seems equally good to be either way... sell it and get PCIe card or keep it and get PCIe when you can no longer get motherboard with PCI slot... it will still take 1-2 years till they have them no more for sure so keeping your card (if it servs you well) for another few years is good... up to you really. If you can't decide flip a coin :) PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
Bucic Posted February 24, 2011 Author Posted February 24, 2011 It answered itself :) I'll have to be 'mobile' during the upcoming 3 years at least so no desktop computers for me during that time. Besides, we're talking 30 bucks here, tops, so it's not even worth the talking ;) F-5E simpit cockpit dimensions and flight controls Kill the Bloom - shader glow mod Poor audio Doppler effect in DCS [bug] Trees - huge performance hit especially up close
