Rusty_M Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) I've never noticed us having more tenses than any other language, unless we go into the Scots dialect. "You'll can do that later" A few of my Finnish friends really struggle with our prepositions though. Edit: we're all cunning linguists here eh? LordWolf Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 English hard, hahaha. Try Slovenian, we got dual beside single and plural, plus three genders and times, so the number of permutations on how and when you say any word in a sentence, just skyrockets. I always had lower grades in Slovenian than English, go figure... Easiest language on the planet I speak Engish, German and am studying Japanese, but I have to agree, Slovenian language is hardest of them all :P Besides of all the conjugations, there are exceptions everywhere, we even have exceptions in exceptions :)

Dunno how it looks in real practice but here you are taught to use all times lol. I heard that Perfects aren't used so often but.... this is what I don't like in English :) Why did they make so many of them :D Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... Rusty_M Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 It looks more complicated set out that way than I realised. Don't all languages have that issue, though? I remember struggling with things like that in French and German. It took me ages to learn the subjonctif and Konjunktiv, which represent almost dead tenses in English. The world is going mad. Me? PlainSight Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The only difficulty i found, were some complicated words. I can never write them properly without googling them first. Like environment or consciousness, that's my favourite. You know how to say them and what they mean, but writing'em down is a PITA. But i'm sure Germans can come up with even worse examples... Teej Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 you don't realy understand Chinese! talking about characters Chinese only have less than 7000words need to be remembeted and they have there own meaning. they are not so hard to remember because they are composed by different parts. the parts just like letters in EnglishЈЎI think if I want to fully understand English news in BBC I need to kown at least 12000words ЈЎthat is mean I still have 4000ЎЄ 5000words need to be remember! Each has its own challenges, and both have plenty of words that are subtly different in spelling or pronunciation...but vastly different in meaning. English... laughter vs slaughter ;) Chinese (cantonese at least) the difference between "hungry" and "diarrhea" is in the tone. "Tank! I need a program for a TM Warthog!" aaron886 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 chinese is the best! speaking of endless words, chinese has like 47,035 characters Hehe. I would like to learn Chinese though, because it's so foreign to me. Unfortunately yuhan, we are used to exactly opposite languages. :D

Don't forget your/you're and its / it's "etc." is spelled as such - it's an abbreviation of "et cetera", not " ect. " " your's " is never correct. "it's" means "it is" (or it was, it has, etc.) "its" means something that "belongs to it" - "its" is the impersonal replacement for "his" and "her". "his place, her mirror, its leg" One "correct" construct i hate is "whom". I know it's right...I know where to use it...it just sounds bad and is more difficult to say. :D It's like talking about "cool hwip" (family guy reference). "Tank! I need a program for a TM Warthog!" Sanch0 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Also from 26 characters in english you can write and read ANY word you want... with chinese you have to learn all thousands of these characters (and I doubt anyone knows all of them) if you want to be able to read and write ALL of the language ;) From the other side it could be very wierd how they are able to express milion words using only 26 chars. Everything depends on the point of view. :music_whistling: PVAF "A fighter without a gun... is like an airplane without a wing" dedicated to F-4 Phantom
Shaman Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Wha? English is like the easiest language on the planet. And no - it's not my native language, but I often prefer it to my own. I have same thing for quite long time. I express myself better in English that in my native language. It is also easier to explain what I have on mind. However it has been the other way around many many years ago ;) English is "lingua franca" of aviation, that's for sure.
