Status Report: Slowly getting the hang of this beast

Ok..at first it was how to I turn this thing on?? Where is the &%$#@@!! so and so switch? How do I close the canopy? Et alia. Then it was...ok, how do I keep this thing straight and level in the air? How do I land properly and how do I use the CDU to find divert fields etc. This phase is still slowly unravelling. Very soon it is going to be how to use the TPG and the other sensors to find objects in the landscape. Slowly, ever so slowly, practice is starting to have an effect. Each take off feels like a full experience and I find I do NOT want to exit mid flight when real life calls me away from the computer. Instead, I want to divert to the nearest and get my hog on the tarmac asap. And when I do this, a satisfied feeling is had.

This is one immersive sim!

apoll out!

This sim is going to take forever to learn! There's a reason I've barely actually used it. I'm still reading the manual. I just read the CDU section last night. Almost 100 pages of stuff I don't understand. I realise that it'll probably be more understandable after reading the "flight school" section and also once I have learned enough to know why I need to know everything the CDU can do!

What helped for me is doing the training missions so you'll get the hang of the basics and then use the manual for the more specific stuff.

the best investment i made for this flight sim was buying the beta early on, im comfortable flying now but still learning the more advanced systems, when Falcon 4.0 came out it raised the bar, DCS A10c has blew away the bar nothing currently out compares, of course this is my opinion

In all seriousness, a lot of the stuff in the manual for the CDU is useless. Many of the CDU pages consist of things that concern the ground crews rather than the pilot. It's a testament to the level of detail ED has put into this sim.

Refer to the navigation section of the manual, specifically pages 444-458 for a more practical approach to using the CDU.

It wont take long.. just do a little every day and soon enough you'll get the hang of it.

That is the fun of it... that every day there is something new to learn.

Last night I learned that ATC in online play isn't working right. I was cleared for a landing and ran right into someone taking off.. lol

May your takeoffs equal your landings!

Complete a mission and save a track. Date it as the day you flew the mission.

Exactley a 6 months later, fly the same mission and record the track......then sit back and see how much of a difference there is to your flying and operation of the systems.

Bet the difference will be amazing!!

That's a really good idea, Carney! I did the startup training the other day, and decided to go for a fly about afterwards (hadn't even set up controls). Took off (without permission) and just gave it a whirl. I noticed on a nearby airfield that there are some targets. I blew up a couple of trucks. When trying to strafe a tank, I overdid it, and destroyed the tank with the fuselage of the A10 instead of the cannon. I think there's a lot of room for improvement there!
