JCook Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I need some easy steps for locating a tanker so I can practice refuelling. I've downloaded a tanker training mission but I am having trouble finding the tanker. Assuming I know the altitude, and I am in Air T/R Mode with the right TACAN frequency what are the steps I need to do to fly to the tanker? I had thought pointer #1 on the HSI would point to the Air-Air TACAN of the tanker - does this automatically show up in the HUD? Or is the HUD showing steerpoints. The whole A10 Navigation system is extremely complex.
SimFreak Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) Here is a simple mission with tanker right in front of you :) Just press "\" and talk to tanker (if you have simple comm on) Enjoy getting gas :)FuelMeBaby.mizrefuel.trk Edited March 20, 2011 by SimFreak
DocSigma Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 You will not see HUD indications for heading to the tanker. AFter turning on the TACAN, setting the right channel/frequency, you have to make sure you disengage STPT and engage TACAN on the navigation control panel ( bottom center right in front of stick). You will then get prooper reading displayed on the HSI. You will fly HSI indications to the tanker, but I don't think AA T/R will give you range just bearing and headings to the tanker. In short you have to fly the HSI.. there will be no HUD indications for directionality to the tanker. Hope that helped. Don't forget that when you visual and are positioned behind the tanker to contact the tanker. Inseckt Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) I tried this yesterday, and you actually DO get range on the HSI... I suprised me also, but i guess it somehow measures the strength on the signal or something, allthough no very accurate I guess, it was showing 2 nm when I was in close formation with the tanker:)... As for the OP, you are correct, the "nr. 1" needle shows the direct magnetic heading for the tanker, just follow that heading at approx the same altidude and you should find it:) No HUD indication though... EDIT: Additional tip: fly 1000-2000 ft lower than the tanker as it is easier to spot against the sky than the ground... Teeps Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 This thread has some detail on why you get range info with the tanker, and you won't with another A-10: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=68331 Win10 x64, 16 GB RAM, Ryzen 5 1600X @3.60 GHz, 500 GB SSD, GeForce 1080 Ti
