I have been doing all my training using the set missions. I now feel confident to have a go at the Campaign missions.

 

When we start a Campaign mission is it normal practise to load the plane yourself in the Mission Planner. The reason I ask is I started the first mission in the first campaign and found myself sitting in the hangar with only 4 AGM-65D's and 5300 lbs of fuel loaded.

 

I looked in the GUI Manual but it didn't give any guidance on starting a mission.

no, the plane is loaded specific to each mission, so the load out depends on the mission.

 

but yes, only half a tank and 4 mavs for a massive russian armored offensive seems a big weird, i allways take a look at the briefing and the map, and then decides wich loadout im using

I personally can never seem to locate the magical armor columns the JTAC talks about on the first Devil's Cross mission. Each time I attempt the mission, I find roughly 3 - 4 columns of T-80s and BMP-2s. Each time I commit to a column, I never hit the right one according to the BDA. So it's like playing Russian Roulette...there's 4 or so columns out there, now guess which one is correct. :mad: Plus it's always type 3 tasking and isn't marked. I need some intel!

Campaign missions are pretty rough at the moment. I find myself editing new parking situations for a lot of them so everyone will taxi and not get hung up. The loadouts mostly don't fit the mission requirements either.

 

Right now I am stuck trying to do armed recon in the 3rd campaign and the game keeps crashing when MIG-29s come looking for me. Approach each mission with an open mind and ready to edit them in the mission editor.

 

I still love everything about the game though, even the blemishes.

It seems like whether the JTAC gives you a target in your TAD is hit and miss in this mission, (you have to circle him a while before getting targets, as mentioned in the brief). He will give you co-ords though, so just enter them into the CDU and slave TGP to the new WP.

Yeah, I always change my loadout too. Just like in Falcon. Take the weapons you want for a particular mission. Definately take up a TGP too as this will aid you in IDing targets. Also, when you think you have found your target, press F5 "contact" and JTAC will tell you if you have the correct assigned target. Then turn round, get some distance and reattack. It's better to be sure than rush in and start throwing MAVs around willy nilly. The DC01 mission will have you looking for T80s, but behind them will be columns of IFVs. There are two groups of lines of moving vehicles. Make sure you have the correct group. Just keep firing a single MAV at the lead vehicle. That will bunch them up and stall them. Go around and keep an eye on them and when they form up into a column again, kill the lead vehicle again and they will bunch up and stop again. This is how you stall the advance and win the mission. I did it for both groups of columns and kept egressing to adder and then turning hot for the reattack if they started moving again.

That's depressing about the state of the campaigns, but not really surprising. As always, user-made missions and campaigns are likely to come to the rescue but programmed AI behavior is so unpredictable and often just plain broken right now that building missions in the ME is hit and miss. Let's hope they'll fix the main issues in the next patch. If they can overhaul the AI, or at least cure its more serious ills, they'll give the sim much more longevity via the community's use of the ME. Stock campaigns always seem to be a combination of over-ambitiousness, hurried design and broken AI.

True. The only one more or less playable is the second one (can't remember the name).

 

Devil's cross is bugging here and there (wingmen unable to take off, random CTDs, drunk JTAC). Overall difficulty in attacking full scaled russian tank battalions equiped with decent SAM protection in the weather suitable mostly for helicopter operations gives some doubts about designers' adequacy as well.

 

The Shore - well, never passed though even first mission, although tried it at least 5 times. C-17 blocking taxi to the runway for my dummies and SEAD F-16 and helicopter which will happily circle about shot-down pilot until you run out of patience...

 

I do understand that doing proper campaigns was never a priority, but some better management of expectations should be in order. It would be much better to release one campaign which is short but done with a high quality and some effort, rather then frustrating people with what we have today.
