olemetry Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hi all. I have MSI P7N Platinum motherboard with a E8400 processor. Can anyone recommend some good ram. I have 2 GB now but wanna upgrade to 4 or 8. Thanks yall. I know very little about RAM. I have not overclocked.
Kuky Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 You need to keep in mind only 1 thing... all RAM should be matching, ie same brand/type/speed/timings If you bought your RAM (or PC) long time ago you may not find matching RAM sticks... you can then either get new set and replace the existing ones or at least get same brand/speed RAM of new one... second option wil be cheaper but first option will not give you any headaches if you come accross compatibility issues... not 100% that you will, but might. If you get new sticks with addition to existing and they are different specs your faster RAM will be running at paste of the slowest one. Bodo Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) I just upgraded from some 4x1GB sticks to 4x2GB sticks. Same brand, Corsair. Never had problems with this brand but OCZ/Kingston/Crucial etc, all good as far as I am aware. Ebay is a good place for RAM, a lot of people selling off their older gen stuff like my rig as they've moved on to i7 stuff. Managed to get a 4GB pair for 38 GBP. the other day Kuky is spot on, though. Make sure they're matching. Same CAS latency, same speeds, same sizes. You may want to sell your current 2GB and upgrade in the mean time. your motherboard supports a maximum of 8GB, if I were you and I was on 64 bit, I'd try and max that out with 4x2GB sticks of a decent brand. Are you on a 32 bit or 64 bit OS? olemetry Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Do I go for 2x4GB or 4x2GB ? DDR 3? Is 9-9-9-24 good timing? Also, some good ram says for i5, i7, etc. Will this still work in my comp?
Bodo Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Your motherboard only supports DDR2. i'd go for 4x2GB sticks which isn't as pricey as 2x4GB sticks of DDR2/ Corsair 550D / Be Quiet 650W Pro 10 / ASUS P8Z77-V Pro / Intel i5 3570K / 16GB Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz / EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX2 4GB / 128GB Samsung 830 / RME HDSPe Multiface 2 / 1TB Samsung F3 / Prolimatech Megalames Rev. Mugenjin Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Your board doesn't support DDR3. And you really don't need 8GB, especially if you have a 32bit OS, which you most likely have. So go for 2x2GB.
Bodo Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) yeah but I think he's getting a 64 bit copy of windows 7. I do agree that 8GB is a little overkill so yeh, stick to just a pair of 2GB sticks. If you want to go for 8, I'd say why not? For me it makes a difference with music programs I use but as far as DCS stuff, well, I'm yet to fully see whether there is a huge benefit. It's not too much money considering I just spend about 70 GBP on getting 8GB where if you're to buy new a pair of 2GB sticks is around 50 GBP. Having said that, I would agree with Mugenjin, just get 4GB for now but get a pair of 2GB sticks, that way you'll still have another pair of slots if you want to try 8GB in the future. By that point, though, you'll probably want to upgrade everything down to the motherboard allowing you to use DDR3. Mugenjin Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 If he would really use applications which would necessitate 8GB I'm sure he'd already know. Just for gaming there's no benefit of 8 GB over 4 GB.
