Having serious problems with my situational awareness, I thought I'd start using the padlock functions in the game, but although the keyboard commands work, padlocking is totally useless. I'm trying to use the "lock terrain" view. I was expecting it to work like in Falcon. You look at the ground, and the point on the terrain that's in the center of your view, gets locked. In A-10, it seems to lock on to random ground positions (within view), making it useless. If I want to lock the view to a road where there are some tanks, I center my view on that road and press the padlock key, but then it will lock on to some ground coordinate way up\down\left\right of where I want it to, so when I turn around for another attack, my view is nowhere near the enemy tanks... Am I just doing this wrong, or is the padlock function bugged?

Yeah, I've already decided to get TrackIR. Situational awareness is non-existent without it.

But when they have a padlock feature in the game, I'm just wondering how it's supposed to work. Seems pretty useless to me.

I imagine it locks onto the nearest ground vehicle, (not that I have ever used it) Get track IR you will never go back.

Track IR is AMAZING, but let me clarify something.

Sure, if you are at 500 feet and happen to spot a target, with trackir, you will be able to keep eyes on as you circle the target.

However, if you are at 20,000 feet and think that because you have trackir you will be able to spot targets easily, you are wrong. I find myself using the left cntrl+f5 (exterior padlock) all the time in order to help spot targets. Even then, if the target is behind me, I have to turn the jet around, point my nose at it so I can put the targeting pod diamond on it, and then I can move on from there.

With that said...track ir increases the realism greatly. When you first get it, it will feel weird. Don't give up, use it for a week and it will grow on you.

right, but spotting targets with padlock is like using F7 external view for me... or F10 map... I feel like cheating..

If I need to find targets, I use the JTAC, and if there is none, the TGP in IR mode..

You shouldn't be able to spot and track targets at 20,000 feet with the Mk.1 eyeball, limitations of the sim or not. As Immel said, it should be TGP/JTAC.

I can understand the need for a padlock if you're low as the limitations of sitting in front of a monitor would severely hamper your SA.

Believe me, those limitations are hampering away! I'm going to order two items for my computer this week: TrackIR and either a HOTAS Warthog or an X65F. Haven't decided yet. I can't believe I'm even trying to fly this sim without a HOTAS (using a Logitech Extreme 3D pro and rudder pedals).
