ScEBlack1 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I saw a post the other night about somone saying we should have an Aero windows running for better fps and it is what Gadroc suggests for those using Helios, but, Strongarm suggested not to have it on because it is a resource hog and not needed for tjose not running Helios. I am curious as to whether anyone has verified if there is an fps gain in the sim for those not using Helios and having the Aero theme NOT turned on and using simply a basic theme?

S77th-konkussion Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I was under the impression that this was an issue- back when vista first hit the scene. Supposedly it's not as big a deal as it was. Secondly- I have seen several apps disable aero on their own- or windows does it automatically.... I'm not convinced it really helps these days. I tried it for an issue that persists to this day- made no difference.. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
asparagin Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Also tried it: on / off has no effect on performance (fullscreen, without helios). Spoiler AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, MSI MEG X570 UNIFY (AM4, AMD X570, ATX), Noctua NH-DH14, EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti XC3 ULTRA, Seasonic Focus PX (850W), Kingston HyperX 240GB, Samsung 970 EVO Plus (1000GB, M.2 2280), 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 DIMM CL16, Cooler Master 932 HAF, Samsung Odyssey G5; 34", Win 10 X64 Pro, Track IR, TM Warthog, TM MFDs, Saitek Pro Flight Rudders
hassata Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Why not verify it for yourself? Then you can tell us :) Nate Always the best course. I suspect: Full screen, little or no difference. Windowed, Aero on results in 15-30 more FPS, irrespective of HELIOS or other 3rd-party Apps. My experience, YMMV. Please post back . [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
StrongHarm Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Like most things in the realm of technology; it's relative to the end user. If a user has a high end system, particularly the video card, they won't see a drop in FPS in full screen with games like DCS, but may see a small drop in games that are more GPU dependent (common recommendation on other game forums is to turn it off). If an end user with 80% of the hardware resources of end-user1 tests their system, they may see a significant drop in frame rate in DCS in fullscreen when using Aero. The best approach is not testing on a single system (nice! Apache just flew over and shook my house) or opinion, but rather fact. What does Aero do? Aero is really the code name for full desktop effects for Vista and Win7. It utilizes the GPU to render your desktop and things that interact with the desktop with cinematographic effect. It also turns on features such as extra visual queues, animation while dragging, 'Flip 3D' to view high end graphics while Alt+Tabbing, and using movie clips as desktop wallpaper. Increased system resource use can be observed by turning it on. On the other hand, if you're not in full screen in an application, Aero enables the 'Windows Presentation Foundation' to increase graphic quality in that windowed mode app. Microsoft has told end users to disable Aero for better gaming performance. In fact, there are many games that automatically disable Aero on startup. Microsoft has specifically provided a tool, called 'Disable Desktop Composition' to allow the end user to choose disable Aero on app startups. Based on the hardware of even the 'recommended specs' of DCS, it's my opinion based on these facts, that the average end user running full screen will benefit from turning Aero off. This will free more system resources that can be used by DCS. In short, the question of whether to use Aero is parallel to the question of whether to use HDR, or high shadows. Like Nate said.. give it a try and find out how it effects your hardware and apps. As for me? I personally like to have a system that can handle the load and them some. I use Aero, HDR, and High Shadows, and my performance in DCS is more than acceptable. I hope my time in answering this has helped you guys in some way, because I know I could be using the time to help others that would definitely benefit from it. This argument, residual of another post, has been interesting and time consuming, and I wish you well in finding your truth. It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
ScEBlack1 Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 Thank you all for your responses on this, I will check for myself tonight after work to see if it makes a difference. I have had no problems in the past with regards to fps and I have a high end system along with new patch all runs smoothly, I was simply curious about thi since I first heard about it and like to learn as much as I can about these things, thank you all for the conversation.

metalnwood Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 On my system running a 6970 at 4000x2280 in *windowed* mode I get ~60 fps at the beginning of the first instant mission and 10 with aero turned off. My understanding of the aero thing is that turning it on only applies to windowed mode so it should pay to remember that point. If running in fullscreen only you may want to turn it off depending on specs.
