redbeard Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 here is a link to a track of me attempting the river run mission. I'd appreciate it if anyone could watch and tell me how I could be more effective and do things more efficiently and also not die every time I try this. Even though I manage to destroy 5/6 bunkers I completely ignore the air defenses, mostly because I have an impossible time finding them without using labels. The track is only about 10 minutes long and I'd appreciate any tips you could offer me. DISCLAIMER: This might be painful for some people to watch as I am very much still learning this sim lol.
jeffyd123 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Just keep practicing...You will learn to stay above 10,000 feet (AGL) or more when there are SAMs around. Fly back and forth to your enemy, about 10 - 15 miles out and keep searching on your TGP for those lil buggers. when your view from your pod gets blocked, turn 180 degrees and keep looking. Always get the SAMs and AAA first. the next thing to learn is to use quick views for your MFDs. I remapped my RCTRL+NUM0 to just NUM0 to activate/deactivate quick views. it really helps a lot. Be sure to use white hot/black hot on your pod too... it will make the enemy units show up better... usually. I bet in a week you'll be killing commie aggressors by the hundreds! 1 i7 8700K @ 4.4Ghz, 16G 3200 RAM, Nvidia 1080Ti, T16000 HOTAS, TIR5, 75" DLP Monitor

redbeard Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 jeff, I use a trackir and the quickview for mfd didn't seem to do anything, I tend to just move my head towards the mfd to get a better look. As far as searching with the tgp, even when I know exactly where the enemies are I have a hard time finding them. It's very frustrating, on this particular mission there are a group of sams north of the river and I can never find them with my tgp, there was one instance where they showed up on my tad and at that time I didn't know how to get my tgp to a specific area on my tad. I think I know how to do that now, but since that one time nothing has popped up on my tad for me to take advantage of.
kingneptune117 Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Wait ...you can find Sam's on your TAD? redbeard Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 Wait ...you can find Sam's on your TAD? There was a wedding cake on my tad in their position, at the time I didn't know how to mark it as spi and lock it up though. It only happened that one attempt and never again since. I just tried this mission again and at bunker 5 I got shot down by an SA-13 and 19 with no warning, all the while I was popping flares..
jeffyd123 Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 (edited) Thanks Warrior! Ok... quick view (RALT+NUM0) will show a forward view of the pit... you then use the numbers on your keypad to view different instruments in the pit. The MFD will be full screen and it really helps. The wedding cake sounds like you may have made something the SPI... it usually shows up like that. When searching with your TGP, its best to Slave it to the Steerpoint (china hat back long), then start searching that area... you will also see the TGP indicator on your TAD to help you get situational awareness. The SA-13, SA-19 & SA-15 are medium altitude SAMS... you gotta be AT LEAST 20K AGL to have any chance to evade them... generally, you find them from far away (10 miles or so), turn in, get the mav off ASAP and TURN AWAY. If the RWR goes off (use it in "semi" mode) break off the attack and turn away without any delay. the other SAMs are pretty lame and wont touch you at 20K. Best to stay up high when you move to a new area so you can clear it of SAMs first. Many times Im at 22K or 24K to evade SAMs. next time I hear from you I want to see a track of you killing 5 SAMS! get to work flyboy! redbeard Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 I still keep ignoring the SAMS because I can't find them lol, even with labels I put my tgp on the label and there is nothing there..is it something to do with my graphics settings or what? I'd love to fly online with someone that can walk me through this here and help me out.
jeffyd123 Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 ummm... do you have 1024 as your setting for MFD resolution in your video settings? Are you zooming in? are you using white/black hot? do you have teamspeak 3 installed? i7 8700K @ 4.4Ghz, 16G 3200 RAM, Nvidia 1080Ti, T16000 HOTAS, TIR5, 75" DLP Monitor
redbeard Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 yes to all of the above, I just succesfully used the quick views for the mfds, I didn't know about using the numpad after hitting kp_0. It worked much much better and I was able to spot targets for once.

genbrien Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 In the river mission there is at least 4 MANPADs, and they are quite difficult to find. Near bunker 5-6 I know there is 2 in the river's bed, wich you'll see with labels ON, but you wont see them until you're over them because they are lover than the sorrunding terrain. Personnally, I did it by the right of the river and in reverse(started with bunker 6-5-4-3-2-1). You are farther from the SA-11, and with your +wingmen MAVs, you can clear the SAMs at bunker 6-5, than you climb over 10000' and drops bomb on the Shilkas and bunker.
